[SOLVED] 18.2 installer crashing

Postby petri0 » Wed Nov 15, 2017 3:02 pm

Never had this kind of trouble before with Mint. Could it be Ryzens fault - is AMD still that bad? Anyhow after I gone through partitioning on installing and start writing my name etc it crashes claiming that I should be using lower speed when I'm burning the DVD. It's an USB stick actually - can't burn that slower.

Because this is new hardware Ryzen 5 and Asus Prime X370-Pro so of course I'm suspecting them. I have tried to install without network cabel and starting with "sudo ubiquity" but no success. Anyone who knows other alternatives to make the installation work?

I have the same board. :) And running 18.1

Have you tried a different usb port. On the back they have 3.1/3.0/2.0 ports.

Also, Have you upgraded your bios?

UPDATE: Re read your post.

What program are you using? Just open a term window and DD the iso to the stick. That should work fine.

Isn’t there an issue with the kernel not supporting Ryzen under 18.2? Don't quote me but I'm sure I've read that here.

Try installing 18.3 Beta, comes with Kernel: 4.10.0-38.

I've been running it fine under intel since yesterday.

Thanks for replying. BIOS is the newest 1201, and I have used 2 USB sticks and moved around the USB ports which BTW in my board lacks the 2.0 ones  - or there isn't any black ones but they can't put blue on 2.0 port right? SSD has GPT table with necessary partitions according to this site: https://medium.com/@manujarvinen/settin ... a1fcf8d502

I used the USB Image Writer which has worked just fine so far. Even the checkup on stick at boot gives green light so it should be ok.

Thing is I had 18.2 installed on this and with kernel 4.10.0-38 but it started to give constant AW SNAPs in Chrome and VLC and Kodi simply crashing at start - untill then it worked somehow.

Now I have even tried with 18.3 beta. Crashes at exactly same point - where the name, computer name and password is written.

I know that Kodi would segfault on me when installing and it was because Iam using a RX480 video card and the AMD driver. I switched to the kernel driver and that fixed everything.

Try using DD to write to the stick:

dd if=some.iso of=/dev/yourstick bs=2048

IceWarp * Samba AD * Mint 18.1 * RAID 1/5 * OpenVPN * Linux since kernel 2.0.36

One of the RAM sticks was faulty. Mint 18.2 works like charm with the healthy one - now I just have to wait the store to test the faulty one and decide am I going to get replacement. Would be surprised if not.
