Cannot run linux mint kde 18.2 64 bit live image

Post by dutchmintuser »

Dear fellow linux mint enthousiasts!

I created the mentioned live USB image, using the dd command.
I tried running it from my laptop, which is a 6-7 year old DELL XPS L501x
To do this I used F11 to set the boot image to USB first.

Booting succeeds and I get a text based Grub screen.
But all the lines in the Grub menu fail to work (including the memory test)
It gives an error about not being able to boot the kernel (invalid argument)
The error flashes by and is difficult to read.

So in summary:
- Succesfully created a 64bit USB boot image
- Booting works
- Starting the kernel does not work and give an error message

It is noteworthy that the linux mint Cinnamon USB image always worked in the past.
But I never got the KDE image to boot correctly. Perhaps it is created in a different way?

Thanks for any insights!

Thanks for this reply!
I tried all mentioned options and nothing worked.
I cannot adjust anything else in my BIOS, this being a DELL computer which has a largely locked BIOS.
(Only thing I did in the past was put USB to compatibility mode, otherwise I cannot boot from USB at all.)

I think this still does not explain why in the past the linux cinnamon image always worked and the kde image always failed.
The kernel load part should be the same for both, no?

Is there a way to capture the error message?
By studying the text flashing by I think it reads:

loading /casper/vmlinuz OK
loading casper/initrd.lz:
loading kernel failed: invalid argument

And I just tried to boot from USB with my self-made PC, with an intel 2500K processor, which for sure does not contain any other video card except from the built-in video in the processor.
Exact same result. I get into the menu, but it cannot boot the kernel using the casper thingy.
Am at a loss what to do.

Hi "dutchmintuser",

Welcome to the wonderful world of Linux Mint and its excellent forum !

Try using one of the applications deigned for creating bootable USB sticks, like Unetbootin, Etcher, Linux Mint Image Writer, MultiSystem, etc... What operating system did you use to "dd", Linux?

Hope this helps ...
Phd21: Mint 20 Cinnamon & xKDE (Mint Xfce + Kubuntu KDE) & KDE Neon 64-bit (new based on Ubuntu 20.04) Awesome OS's, Dell Inspiron I5 7000 (7573) 2 in 1 touch screen, Dell OptiPlex 780 Core2Duo E8400 3GHz,4gb Ram, Intel 4 Graphics.

further experiments:
manjaro Cinnamon community image live USB from 11-2016 starts OK from USB
latest fedora 27 with Gnome starts OK from USB

So for me the problem is specific to the linux mint live USB boot process

@phd21: dd with linux, sure. Booting works so why try another program?
Isn't 21 a bit young to have a phd? :-)

Also, thx for your welcome. I have been using Mint for 2 years now, and generally enjoying it.
