[SOLVED] Unable to boot LM 18.3 64-bit Cinnamon from Flash Drive

Hello everybody

Yesterday I tried to install Linux Mint 18.3 64-bit Cinnamon version alongside Windows 10 64-bit from my USB drive.

My BIOS is configured to boot only in UEFI mode. When I boot from my flash drive on UEFI, and I start Linux Mint normally (not compatibility mode) I have these weird lines on my screen, which I assume that are disorted letters. Some new of these strange lines appear, but after a while the screen completely freezes showing something like this:



Also, when I boot my flash drive in UEFI mode and start LM in compatibility mode I see this screen and it stays there (I put a clickable link to see it in higher resolution):

Finally, I decided to go to my BIOS and enable Legacy + UEFI boot (I have an MSI motherboard). I booted my flash drive in legacy mode, then started Linux Mint without compatibility mode and I see this:



I tend to think that my problem is related to my GPU, isn't it? I have a GTX 970.

Finally I could start Linux Mint and arrive at the desktop screen when booting from Legacy Mode and starting in Compatibility mode. However when seeing the LM desktop I get a warning saying that the system is running with a higher CPU usage, and the screen looks with a lower resolution than it should have.

Of course I made all these tests with different flash drives and recording the ISO file with different methods, but all the results were the same.

I also have another question. If I install Mint from the only way it worked (booting in Legacy mode, and then starting in compatibility mode) will I have any problems when using LM if later I disable Legacy mode and leave only UEFI on? Sorry for this noob question.

It is most likely the GPU Nvidia takes some special boot parameters. You can find out how to do that here:

How about fixing the issue instead of expecting people to go through all this trouble? Especially when you expect people to donate. This problem has happened before with the Nvidia 900 series and older versions of Mint. The fact you would add the same bug to a newer version tells me you are incompetent.

Welcome aboard just to blame us for being incompetent.
Question only is who is "you"?
We are Linux Mint users and forum members. We can suggest steps to solve a problem, provided such steps are known. But changing Linux Mint components, in particular proprietary third party video drivers is outside the scope of what we can do.
So you are beating the wrong dog by calling us incompetent.
You are, however, free to join the Linux Mint Github webpage and make constructive suggestions on how to make Linux Mint use special boot parameters automatically for specific NVidia graphics cards.
Only thing which you might want to avoid is using the term "incompetent" when talking to the Mint developers.

Also to note that NVidia...who sells 10s of millions of cards every year, including to you apparently (aka. they don't expect you to simply...donate a couple of bucks on a good-will basis), still hasn't got their shit together 5 yrs later...

The main blame for this problem lies with Nvidia. Also to be blamed is Linux's miniscule 2% world desktop marketshare.

Hello Hugo and welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
Your comments are echoed by many who do not know how an open source/ Linux distro works.
In this particular case it's Nvidia that at fault as they will not release drivers for their cards as open source. That makes it very difficult for distros Like Mint to ship their drivers legally and so So Devs. mostly at their own cost and time try the best they can to backward engineer the driver -- in this case Nouveau. Which works quite well some of the time but not always. Nvidia does provide pretty good Linux drivers but the legality of shipping them as default drivers causes many Distros to avoid legal hassles and not install them as default.
Some distros do included the Nvidia drivers pre-installed, PCLinuxOS comes to mind. You may want to try that.

The Mint Dev's work extremely hard and do an excellent Job for almost no pay. Many donate their own time and equipment.
So you can get an OS like M.S. or Apple that charge you plenty to use their software, or you can join the team and be willing to learn as you go for open source software.
the one thing about linux is you have the choice.

Instead of posting in a thread where the OP's issue has been solved, you would be better starting a new thread with your concerns, although these points have been addressed in the subsequent replies.

I'd like to add that you pay for a Microsoft OS and are therefore entitled to at least a degree of support as per their terms and conditions. With Linux, we have a fantastic community providing knowledge and expertise on a mostly voluntary basis.
