Mint 18.3 install issue: Black Screen. Tried everything.

Post by jackhavenar » Tue Dec 05, 2017 4:31 pm

I need to be able to use Linux Mint 18.X for a quantum chemistry course at my university, but I cannot install (dual boot) Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Arch Linux, or Debian for the life of me. The is my first foray into Linux, and it's been pretty discouraging.

I used a 16 GB USB 2.0 flash drive to try to install Linux, and it always works up until I am in the GRUB. I am then presented with 4 options. I choose to install Mint, and then my screen goes black. I have followed the guides I've seen to the letter, and I am bewildered as to what to do.

So far, I've tried removing quiet splash, removing quiet splash and adding nomodeset. I've also been with Microsoft support for several hours - they were gracious, but couldn't help - and Lenovo support for 7 HOURS. They wanted $80 to fix it remotely by enabling me to toggle UEFI to Legacy (I don't even know if that would work). Bottom line, I've tried everything that I've seen, and none of it has worked. I would really appreciate some troubleshooting tips and advice. I have literally 2 hours of Linux experience, so I apologize for any novice mistakes. Thank you.

The device is a Lenovo Yoga 720 laptop, running Windows 10. Here are the specs:
OPERATING SYSTEM: Microsoft Windows 10 Home, version 10.0.16299 Build 16299
MANUFACTURER: Lenovo
SYSTEM TYPE: x64-based PC
PROCESSOR: Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU @ 2.80GHz
BIOS VERSION AND DATE: Lenovo 4MCN19WW(V1.05), 3/1/2017
BIOS MODE: UEFI
SECURE BOOT STATE: Off
BOOT DEVICE: \Device\HarddiskVolume1
INSTALLED RAM: 8.00 GB
STORAGE HARDDRIVE: 256 GB SSD

Hello jackhavenar and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
The Lenovo Yoga is a difficult machine to get linux to install on.
The problem seems to be the fake raid that it uses for the H.D.
this Thread may be of help to you : viewtopic.php?t=250953
Seems some of the early units did not allow changing the mode to ACHI.
Good Luck!

Does the computer have a Nvidia graphics card ? Try kernel option modprobe.blacklist=nouveau instead of nomodeset
