Lenovo ideapad 302 installing Linux Mint 18.3 cinimon

Hi all
I have loaded Linux mint onto two laptops and two desktop computers with no problems.(using youtube as a step by step guide), So when I got a new laptop I wanted Linux mint on it. I struggled to get it to load it just kept crashing but finally got it running. The computer now runs for a wee bit then freezes. Also the touch pad has never worked. I use a USB mouse.

The computer is a Lenovo ideapad 320 with an AMD A6 7th gen processor.

Any advice please give in very simple terms and step by step, do not assume any knowledge on my side.

Like with any weird Lenovo issue first check their web support for a Bios update. Also, have you installed the recommended proprietary graphics driver via 'Driver Manager'?

Thanks. Check in Bios: 'secure boot'=disabled; 'raid'/'ahci' set to 'ahci'. If there's a uefi/legacy setting which way is it set? Did you check Lenovo support for an updated bios, those 'raid' settings seem to cause many people issues but Lenovo have reacted.

Try to upgrade to the latest kernel available, 4.13.0-19, I believe. This should fix the touch pad and might fix the freezes but most likely you'll need that bios update.

I assume I need to update BIOS first, then kernel then the last two raid uefi?

Current: 5pcnn17ww there is one 5RCN30WW on their site you down load as a .exe file.
Is it safe to run the exe file in wine?
If I mess up can I get the old version back?

What is the location of the kernel and how do I update it?

what are 'raid'/'ahci' were do I find them and how do I change them?

You have a very new laptop which is likely not yet supported by Linux = wait a few months for full support, eg the coming Linux kernel 4.15.

Try upgrading the Linux kernel from LM 18.3's kernel 4.10 to kernel 4.13 via Update Manager >View >Linux kernels.
... If kernel 4.13 gives more problems, boot back to kernel 4.10 via Grub's Advanced Options and then delete kernel 4.13.(for single-boot system, press & hold Shift key to display the Grub menu during startup, ie before the LM logo appears)

I think you can ignore the mention about AHCI/RAID setting for the internal hard-drive in BIOS setup. BIOS firmware update is likely not necessary for your very new computer.

In early 2016, Lenovo began selling high-end Win 10 Ultrabooks that were locked to RAID disk mode(using the proprietary Intel RST driver) in BIOS setup with no option for AHCI mode, eg Lenovo Yoga 900-13ISK and Ideapad 720 = could not install Linux or Win 7. After much complaint, Lenovo restored the AHCI option through a BIOS firmware update in early 2017.

Or try disabling Hyperthreading in BIOS setup.

A similar link at ... https://linuxmint.com/rel_sonya_cinnamon.php says that AMD and Nvidia graphics cards can cause the screen to freeze before or after the install of LM.

Apologies the computer is a 320 not 302.
What I have done:
BIOS secure boot disabled

Kernal updated to latest 4.13.0.19 It then updated again in the updates.

I then typed in the command line this from a a used on the forum with the same problem different computer model:

That makes sense but maybe you don't have to. According to this bug tracker: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1708852 the fix should have reached Mint kernels and your touchpad should work on the following kernels:

- the 4.4 kernel series with 4.4.0-97.120 and above
- the 4.10 kernel series with 4.10.0-37 and above
