This morning I successfully upgraded to 18.3 using update-manager.
However I was still having some minor problems. So I decided to create a clean installation and see if this made a difference.
I downloaded and verified ISO and ran install.
My current installation is on a Samsung SSD - sdf5.
I installed the fresh system on sdf11 - an unused partition.
[Note I have a number of 'legacy' installations on older drivers].
The installation seemed to go OK but when I rebooted the current system loaded (from sdf5) and the new system was not on the grub menu.
I ran os-prober which found the install on sdf11 but not the current sdf5 !
Attached are gparted screen for ssd and os-prober output.
Before I try anything drastic - Am I missing something simple ?
thanks.

Re: New 18.3 installation not on Grub menu
Have you run
sudo update-grub
? Sometimes necessary even with new installations. Can't hurt.Re: New 18.3 installation not on Grub menu [solved]
Thanks that seemed to sort it out.

1. os-prober and grub-update do not list current root partition (ie sdf5)
2. I had assumed that the new install would be at the top of the list - it didn't - it came last
Anyhow all solved - thanks again
