[SOLVED] Never get option to boot into Mint on Toshiba Laptop

Post by AJG » Sat Dec 30, 2017 12:33 pm

Trying to install 18.3 Cinnamon next to my Win10 install on a Toshiba Satellite P55t-A5118 which originally came with Win 8.1. Booting 18.3 from a USB with ISO, everything seems to function nicely but after install, never get an option to boot Linux.

Using Grub2 with Serena dual booted on my Win 7 desktop and it works just fine. Not so on the laptop.

My intent was to install Mint on the laptop's existing 1TB drive (about 230GB free) and then clone to a 2TB SSD and expand the partitions. Have installed Mint twice now. After shrinking the large NTFS partition, I was left with about 237GB unallocated. The first install, I selected Installation Type 'install linux mint alongside them'. For the second install, I manually created /, /home, and swap partitions along with a small NTFS /data partition that I would enlarge to hold all music, videos, etc. when the 2TB drive is in. In both cases, re-boots or startups always go to Win10 - never a choice.

I just created another USB with Rufus for a 3rd try but booting from the USB now, all I get is Minimal BASH-like line editing supported message...

Any guidance would be appreciated.
regards,
AJG

From a live session provide the following commands output:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
sudo parted --list --script
sudo efibootmgr -v
sudo os-prober
sudo od -A n -t u1 /sys/firmware/efi/vars/SecureBoot-8be4df61-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c/data
sudo od -A n -t u1 /sys/firmware/efi/efivars/SecureBoot-8be4d1-93ca-11d2-aa0d-00e098032b8c

Interesting, I created a new live USB like I had done before (without Rufus), but now on boot off of advanced startup, I'm not presented with the USB option, but do see Ubuntu - which puts me into command line Grub2. In order to boot from the Live USB, I had to go into BIOS (and this is the first time that F2 has ever allowed me to do that! - normally have to shut down Win10 with advanced startup options). Anyway, was able to boot Live by selecting USB in bios after creating a new live USB.

Something went wrong with your latest LM installation, I see no valid Linux partition, only ntfs partitions listed (except fat32 efi partition).

I deleted the Linux partitions to re-load using the Rufus created USB. I can re-create them again easily. and re-run the commands.

Deleted ? You need to reinstall LM then.

Correct. Was in the process of doing just that but the Rufus created USB would not do anything but give me command line grub. So I created a new Live USB and re-installed LM. Still can't boot Mint from HDD. Running Live now. Responses once I boot from live.

The computer uefi firmware is buggy, installing rEFInd Boot Manager in fallback mode is a known workaround in such case. Or a bios update might exist for your computer.

Install rEFInd from your live session this way.

Answer "No" when rEFInd offers to "Automatically install rEFInd to the ESP" :

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rodsmith/refind
apt update
apt install refind
Download special installation script for fallback mode :

Code: Select all

wget http://cdimage.tux.ovh/lebd/refind-fallback-mode
chmod 755 refind-fallback-mode
Run installation script:

Code: Select all

sudo ./refind-fallback-mode
You should get the following output:

Code: Select all

Install rEFInd Boot Manager, confirm "Y" to proceed:
Y
Installing rEFInd...

rEFInd Boot Manager set in Fallback mode...

Fallback mode should allow rEFInd to load
on computers with buggy EFI firmware.

Installation complete, press return to exit.
Reboot normally when done, rEFInd Boot Manager should load.

Well, I can now get into Mint but no longer into Windows.
Upon Boot, I get the following:
>>Checking Media Presence............
>>Media Present..............
>>Start PXE over IPv4, Press [ESC} to exit.

When I press ESC, I get,
>>Checking Media Presence............
>>Media Present..............
>>Start PXE over IPv6, Press [ESC} to exit.

When I press ESC I get,
PXE-E21: Remote Boot Cancelled.

It takes quite some seconds to get through the above.

Eventually I get the grub2 menu. If I select Windows Boot Manager (on /dev/sda2)
I get the following error message:

error: file '/EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi' not found
Press any key to continue

rEFInd Boot Manager does not load ?

From your live session post :

Code: Select all

sudo efibootmgr -v

Switch rEFInd to priotrity mode, that will restore Windows boot loader location and previous computer behaviour.

From your live session, Answer "No" when rEFInd offers to "Automatically install rEFInd to the ESP" :

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rodsmith/refind
apt update
apt install refind
Now switch rEFInd to priority mode:

Code: Select all

wget http://cdimage.tux.ovh/lebd/refind-mode-fix
chmod 755 refind-mode-fix
sudo ./refind-mode-fix
You will get this terminal output:

Code: Select all

Install rEFInd Boot Manager, confirm "Y" to proceed:
Y
Installing rEFInd...

rEFInd Boot Manager set in priority mode...
...
Installation complete, press return to exit.

When done I think another workaround could work.

It seems the computer efi firmware tries successive efi boot loader in registered efi boot order when it can"t find Windows boot loader.

Knowing this, configuring rEFInd in priority mode and moving down one level Windows boot loader from /EFI/Microsoft/Boot/bootmgfw.efi to /EFI/Microsoft/bootmgfw.efi could succeed. Only rEFInd can detect Windows boot loader at that location, Grub can't.

Bingo - can get to Win10, LM, and bios. Thank you so much! Would be interested in your other potential work around when you have the time. I'm going to play a bit with this before I clone HDD to a larger SSD and replace. If you have any suggestions on that end I'd be very interested as well.

Many thanks Laurent85.

Nice. Just wonder, did you also move down Windows boot loader one level or only switch rEFInd to priority mode ?
