Install -26 (it has just arrived) and see whether you still have that problem.

Switch temporarily to the main Mint update server, refresh Update Manager and try again.

Removed Virtualbox - left over from some previous work.
Removed -25
Removed -26
Rebooted, currently on -21
Reinstalled -26, no Virtualbox errors, but same ndis related error.

This time make.log is present...

Now this is a blind shot (VB 5.0.40 isn't compatible with 4.13 in the first place), but what happens if you also further uninstall ndiswrapper-dkms?

Hmm, isn't this package needed for wireless network support? Will give it a try. I suppose it can always be reinstalled...

No need to uninstall ndiswrapper-dkms, you can ignore error messages building extra modules. Messages indicate ndiswrapper and VirtualBox will not work with this kernel.

Regarding VB you can install VB repository, version 5.2 is compatible with kernel 4.13, see https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads

Thanks Laurent85. I take it there is native support for wireless networking in Linux, so the ndiswrapper-dkms package can happily go in the bin?

ndiswrapper's use is to enable older XP-era networking drivers in case the kernel / firmware didn't provided support for those devices...aka, for the most part it's obsolete nowadays. It doesn't hurt to have around...but if you've never used it so far, chances are you never will especially as the years pass by...

Reboot to new kernel, if wireless still works you can remove ndiswrapper-dkms.

Done!! Many thanks for your help. With hindsight, this scenario has probably been true all the while I've been using 4.13.0-xx, just never noticed before
