Another slow boot question

Post by Superannuated »

I installed LM18.3 Xfce on a mid-2007 MacBook a week ago. It consistently takes about 1 min 52 sec to boot up. The systemd-analyze command says it takes 40 sec.

Why the discrepancy? Is that normal?
I realize this is an old slow laptop, but is there something I can do to speed things up?

Code: Select all

scott@scott-MacBook ~ $ systemd-analyze

The 1 min 52 seconds are
+ from which starting event
+ to which end event precisely?
I assume that for systemd the boot phase has been completed the moment that the graphical login screen gets displayed.
Most users, however, will assume the boot process were finished only after the graphical desktop, xfce in your case, has been fully displayed.

So again, which are the two event between which the 1 min 52 seconds elapse?

The 1 min 52 sec are from pushing the power-on button (on the tower) until the desktop is fully loaded on the screen. That is, when the computer is set to automatic login and nothing besides the defaults are set to start automatically (IIRC a couple of minor things were removed from auto start).

Sorry for the late reply, I just got back from a nice 72 km bike ride.

I did another test with the computer set to password required for login. After pushing the power-on button it took ...
about 40 sec for an orange group of lines to flash on the screen,
about 59 sec to when the Mint logo showed up on the display,
and about 1 min 33 sec until the login box appeared.
The desktop was fully loaded at 1 min 57 sec (not counting the time for entry of my password :D).

Re: Another slow boot question

This is pure speculation ...

I've read here about people who have prolonged black screen occurrences during start-up due to an Nvidia gpu. I have some prolonged black screen, too, although I don't know if that is normal or not under Linux for this old MacBook. The MacBook under OS X 10.7.5 didn't boot very fast either.

Anyway, I found an Intel driver for my specific gpu family.
For Graphics Drivers for Mobile Intel® 945GM Express Chipset Family
Intel(R) Graphics Driver - Linux* [Intel-3.4.3006-20051209.i386.tar.gz]
Version: 3.4.3006 (Previously Released) Date: 1/5/2006
Is is a good idea to test out this driver?
If so, how does one uninstall the current driver and install the proprietary Intel driver (tar.gz file)?

Again, my graphics specs:

1) The Intel driver you found says i386... your system: x86_64
2) The Intel driver you found says 1/5/2006. Kernel 4.4 was released...10 years later, on early 2016.
Is is a good idea to test out this driver?

Thanks, it was a long shot. My old MacBook was produced in late 2006 or early 2007 so the 2006 date of the driver didn't alarm me. It is the newest for my gpu on the Intel site. This MacBook is one of those with a 32-bit EFI and 64-bit cpu. I am running 64-bit LM by bypassing the EFI.

I just saw xenopeek's tutorial, "Linux Mint 18 boot time analysis", so let me supply the data he suggests. To me the only thing that looks suspicious is the error messages from the current boot. Again, the time from power button push to desktop loaded is about 2 min, but this is an old MacBook so perhaps that time is normal.

Code: Select all
