Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- Launch a terminal window (this is how to launch a terminal window);
- make the terminal window full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- Copy/paste this command into the terminal:
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)
Press Enter.
Copy/paste the output in your next message.

@ bulldog, .......
You likely need to revert to the previous stable kernel and wait for kernel 4.13.27 or 4.14 or 4.15 LTS.

Re: Bit of a niggle
If you provide the system overview I asked for, I can determine whether your hardware is likely to run well on the 4.4.0-109 kernel. Which also contains the fixes for Meltdown.
@michael louwe: please don't advise people to continue with a kernel with Meltdown vulnerabilities, when there's still the potential option of 4.4.0-109 to be investigated.

Re: Bit of a niggle
New hardware, so the (relatively old) 4.4 kernel series might not work. Yet it's worth a try:
1. Update Manager - panel: View - Linux kernels
2. Install the latest kernel from the 4.4 series (currently 4.4.0-109).
3. Then reboot and make sure that you boot from the 4.4.0-109 kernel (it should be under the Advanced section of the Grub bootloader menu).
4. Test and if satisfactory, remove all installed kernels from all higher series.

Re: Bit of a niggle
In that half screen, can you launch Driver Manager and install the closed non-free Nvidia driver it'll probably offer you? If so, do so and then reboot.bulldog wrote:Sorry No good it booted up OK but only with half a screen.

I think I may have solved this problem.
Chose another driver from driver manager.
nvidia-384.111 was installed
now installed xserver-xorg-video-nouveau version 1:1.0.12-build2
have booted up twice one after the other and all seems well. shall see when i boot after a couple of hours rest.
thanks for your help and assistance.

Re: Bit of a niggle
That's not the optimal solution, because Nvidia cards perform best on the closed non-free driver.... So I advise to give the nvidia-390 a try, which can be installed by means of the reliable graphics-drivers PPA:

Re: Bit of a niggle
Looks suspiciously like this glitch viewtopic.php?f=46&t=261475. There seems to be a bug in grub/plymouth that affects only patched kernels and maybe only some of them (definitely Mints 4.13.0-25/26 and the patched 4.14. on manjaro/arch), on some machines.bulldog wrote:Sorry No good it booted up OK but only with half a screen.
Basically, the 2 top grub options (the only ones you get on a single boot) will get you to a broken screen if you pick one of the patched kernels, booting without the fix below. On dual/multi-boots only the system that's in charge of grub (the top one) will show the screen breakage and will need fixing.
Can you reinstall the nvidia drivers and boot the kernel that broke the screen once again but adding
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=text at grub?

True, sorry about that, was meant as a possible solution for the secondary 'half a screen' issue that popped up when the OP tried to apply your tip to run with 4.4.109. Left my post open for hours before submitting, though, thereby missing the happy end ...Pjotr wrote:@prestonR: the problem appears to be solved already....
