Kernel Panic on Cinnamon64 18.3 install

Post by ghoultek »

Hello all,

I verified the ISO file (sha256). When booting from burned DVD and from USB stick, I encounter kernel panic. I chose the standard boot/install option and the compatibility mode, but both options lead to the same end result. The system I'm attempting to install on is a core2duo-e7500 PC with 8GB RAM, 1.5TB SATA drive, and a Gigabyte motherboard. The error message on the screen is...
VFS: Cannot open root device "ram" or unknown-block(1,0): error-6
Please append correct "root=" boot option:

here is the call trace:
dump_stack+0x63/0x99

kernel_init+0xe/0x100
ret_from_fork+0x2c/0x40
kernel offset:0x140000 from 0xffffffff81000000

Is there some alternate method or parameters I need to supply to the boot loader so that the installer will load?

I was able to verify the install media (USB stick & DVD) on my new Ryzen 7 1700x PC. So the install media definitely is good. I tried IRC and it was suggested that I try using an earlier release for the installation and the run the update to 18.3. Testing Mint 18.2 Cinnamon 64bit next.

v18.2 Cinnamon 64bit gave me a similar kernel panic response when launching from the installation media so, I move on to trying v17.3. Cinnamon 64bit v17.3 worked and completed its install. This allowed me to explore a bit and verify all of my hardware was working. I next moved on to formatting the partition where 17.3 was installed and tried v18.0.

18.0 worked and completed the installation. I was able to upgrade from within Linux Mint 18.0 Cinnamon 64bit to v18.3. I also installed the 4.4 kernel, the nVidia proprietary driver and the Intel micro code. All seems to be working well.

On a side note, there is a very noticeable performance improvement from v17.3 (Cinnamon 64) to v18.3 (Cinnamon 64) with the 4.4 kernel and the Intel microcode installed... this is on my old core2duo E7500 PC.

Thanks to everyone in the Linux Minte IRC chat for the quick help/replies.
