What happens when you try to boot it? Black screen? Error message? Grub Rescue prompt?
Have you tried it on a different computer?
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

The linked Askubuntu thread lists pros and cons for
"live system with persistence on USB pendrive" vs. "full OS installation on USB pendrive"
No advice is given pretending a full installation on a USB pendrive were not advisable.

By the way, I am typing this from a dual boot Ubuntu 16.04.3 system, installed side by side with 14.04.5 on a 128 GB SDXC card.

Hello, Mercuzio.

Can you try booting from the pendrive again? Make sure you enter the Grub boot menu. Inside the Grub menu select "e" for edit. Go down to the line which holds the words "splash quiet". Remove both words from the line. Then press <F10> to go on booting without splash screen but with full boot messages displayed instead.
Text messages should rush up the screen.
At the point when the boot process gets stuck or fails messages will stop rushing across the screen. The last readable messages might give a hint as to what is wrong.

Best regards,
Karl

Hi. Would it be better a SSD external disk ?

Hello, Mercuzio.

Might be that an external SSD disk would be the better choice. Yet, in my case there are 2 reasons for using the SDXC card:
+ no extra device which I have to carry along and no extra cable
+ experimental aspect: how long will the SDXC card work before it will start failing?

Regards,
Karl

There seem to be hints that my experiment might find a sudden and unexpected fatal end.

Hello, Mercuzio.

Have you tried booting with the boot options "splash quiet" removed? Provided you have, what are the last messages which can be read on the screen when the boot process gets stuck?

Regards,
Karl
