Just to wrap this up: I sent the HP Laptop 17-ak0xx back to the supplier and bought a HP-Laptop-17-bs0xx instead with Intel processor and graphics. Installation of Mint Cinnamon 18.3 as dual boot with W10 went smoothly in one afternoon. The only problem that arose was the wifi adaptor not being recognised but that was easily resolved as here: viewtopic.php?f=53&t=263115
