LM 18.3 Cinnamon with full disk encryption: boot failure after upgrade

Hi everybody,

my first question, be gentle please:

I installed Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3 a couple of weeks ago with the full disk encryption ticket in the graphical installer. Yesterday I installed all pending updates of all levels via the update manager (to get the kernel update) and left my seat to deal with semi-urgent matters.

Today waking up the PC and a consequent reboot failed with grub rescue displaying:

Code: Select all

error: file '/boot/grub/i386-pc-normal.mod' not found
I have an old LM installation (Sarah) on another disk in the same PC. Unfortunately I have not used LUKS before so I didn't even manage to mount the other file system from there (see below).

What might have went wrong and what can I do to repair it?

Code: Select all

$fdisk -l /dev/sdd

Disk /dev/sdd: 223,6 GiB, 240065183744 bytes, 468877312 sectors

I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
