Switch from Mint Mate to Mint xfce desktop?

Post by arnauld » Fri Feb 09, 2018 5:51 pm

Hello,

I just installed Mint 18.3 sylvia / Mate and wish to switch to a XFce desktop environment. How can I do that ? Is there a difference in Linux Mint as there is in Ubuntu between a xfce4 package and a xubuntu-package ?

Thank you for any help.

It's best not to mix desktops. That's why there are separate desktop installations.

So I would recommend installing the XFCE version over the Mate version.

On the initial screen the last option which is other or something else where you are able to choose the partition to install to just choose the one where you installed Mate

Make sure you enable the format toggle button.

There are instructions here viewtopic.php?t=122276

Since the partition already exists in your case all you have to do is select it and set the mount point to '/'

But, I don't want to install the XFCE version, just the Xfce desktop environment. Is it possible ?

You can try it, but Mate and XFCE use different file managers and, I think, window managers.

Those components are tightly integrated into the desktop environments and have caused conflicts.

For example the caja file manager is running in the background even though I don't have it open.

If you want to give it a go sudo apt-install xfce4

Good luck

Hello, Arnaud.
You might perhaps find this post helpful: xfce instead of mate, although it was written for an older Mint release.

Karl

Yes, but that is a very good way to break your OS. And fixing that would be harder and more time consuming than just doing a clean reinstall anyway.

Probably do-able. Sometimes there are problems. Go ahead and try it and if it doesn't work out you can do the reinstall.

Try installing package
"xfce4
Meta-package for the Xfce Lightweight Desktop Environment"

I think you also need mint-meta-xfce if you want to get the full Mint Xfce experience.
If I compare

Code: Select all

apt install -s mint-meta-xfce xfce4 --install-recommends
and

Code: Select all

apt install -s xfce4 --install-recommends
the first pulls 65 packages while the second only pulls 41.

I have done the experiment of having both CInnamon and Xfce on a machine, and for the moment it didnt blow up. That said, I dont use that machine very often, and it's not a sensitive one.
The strict no-no is to mix KDE with any other desktop environment.

Oh well, I know, no-one will believe me. :( I will repeat my story nonetheless:
  • I ran Linux Mint 16 Cinnamon and added the full xfce DE later on. Cf. xfce instead of Mate It simply worked. Nothing blew up.
  • I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon from scratch and added the full xfce DE, as soon as it was available for Mint 17.
I updated Mint 17 Cinnamon + xfce to Mint 17.1 Cinnamon + xfce through Update Manager, when Mint 17.1 became available.
This system is still up and running. Nothing has blown up since then.

Thank you all for your advice!

For the time being, I will keep Mate as I just installed it and need my laptop to work and can't afford to lose time trying to install xfce (in case it breaks something). When I am less busy I will try to install it.
