Last time I upgraded was on my desktop, from 18.1 to 18.2, and it went through without a hitch. However, I've done other upgrades in the past which have broken my machine, causing me to have to re-install. But the upgrade on my desktop from 18.1 to .2 via sudo apt-get upgrade in a terminal window didn't seem to break anything.
I finally got my laptop working after 6 months. The Software Update shield indicated an update, so I clicked on it. I got file called something like Mint-upgrade-info. I installed that, and then it came back with a bunch of files that were to be UPGRADED not updated.
I clicked Apply. Then I checked system info, and it says Mint 18.1
Two questions:
First: what's the difference between a software update and an upgrade? Why the UPGRADE instead of an UPDATE?
My desktop is running 18.2, and it works, and I'm leery of further upgrades for fear of breaking something. I want both machines to be running 18.2. Question 2: How to UPGRADE lm18.1 on my laptop to 18.2, NOT 18.3?
Thanks

as root (eg sudo xed) alter /etc/apt/sources.list.d/official-package-repositories.list
amend serena to read sonya
then sudo apt update
then sudo dist-upgrade
I have thought that an update applies to day-to-day software; upgrade is moving form eg 18.1 to18.2 or serena to sonya

Open the Update Manager and click on Edit. What options do you have at the bottom of the list?

Yeah, that's what i thought. So why was an "update" listed as an "upgrade"?

Re: lm18.1-64 cinn. How to upgrade to 18.2 NOT 18.3
I'm marking this solved because i upgraded both the desktop and the notebook to 18.3 with no problems -- other than sane menu not being supported in 18.3.
To be on the safe side I made a timeshift backup first, but it wasn't needed.
Thanks to all

Re: SOLVED lm18.1-64 cinn. How to upgrade to 18.2 NOT 18.3
On the command line, performing an update brings the selection list up to date and identifies new versions of existing software. Performing an upgrade actually installs the new versions of software. Again, on the command line there is an upgrade option that brings in all the software changes that result in a total increment change to the baseline package, such as moving from LM 18.1 to LM 18.2.
