Unable to install Mint: "grub-efi-amd64-signed package failed to install into /target/"

Post by Josbaron2 »

I've done a lot of Googling for this problem and have tried everything I've found, but I cannot get Mint 18.3 (MATE edition) to install. Whether I let the installer handle partitioning automatically, or if I select the "Something else" option and manually set up the EFI System Partition, root partition, and swap space, I get this "grub-efi-amd64-signed package failed to install into /target/" error near the end of the install every time.

SecureBoot is disabled in my laptop's settings. I had no trouble installing Ubuntu 17.10 MATE.

Is this a bug in the Mint installer, or is there something else I can try to get Mint installed on this laptop?

The laptop is a Lenovo X1 Tablet (2nd generation).

Lenovo X1 tablet.? I can't find any relevant information on your tablet. Please give it's full model and specifications or the Terminal output for inxi -Fxz from the Live LM USB/DVD.

Tablets are not well supported by LM but better supported by Ubuntu because they once had Ubuntu Touch available in the Mobile market.

Sorry, it's called the "ThinkPad X1 Tablet", not just "Lenovo X1 Tablet". Anyway, here is the output of `inxi -Fxz`:

It is a tablet, but it has an attached keyboard/trackpad and what should be pretty standard hardware, at least for the core stuff. Please let me know if I can provide any other info, or if you have any suggestions to get Mint installed.

Likely, the problem lies with the level of hardware support in LM 18.3's kernel 4.10 and Ubuntu 17.10's kernel 4.13, wrt the non-mainstream Dual core Intel Core i7-7Y75 (-HT-MCP-), arch: Kaby Lake rev.9 cache: 4096 KB.

Maybe, you need to wait for LM 19.0's kernel 4.15 in May 2018.
