MacBook Pro (High Sierra) problems at step 3: Installation Type. Only see one partition (dev/sda)

Post by James_Smith »

I'm currently typing this from my MacBook Pro. I'm running Linux from the USB. It's kind of cool. However, I am stymied. I have followed the instructions here. When I get to the step "Installation Type" I don't see any choices (as I have every time I've installed Linux on a PC). There is no option to erase the OS, install alongside it, or "something else." Worse yet, I don't see the partitions I created so the only thing I can select is dev/sda.

I know those partitions exist because I used the disk utility on MacOs and saw them for myself after I followed Gene's advice (in the link above).

So... what do I do? It seems that I cannot proceed, because when I select "New Partition Table I get a message that says "You have selected an entire device to partition. If you proceed with creating a new partition table on the device, then all current partitions will be removed."

This sounds ominous. Does it mean that macOS will be deleted, or is it just talking about LINUXROOT and LINUXBOOT (the two partitions I created as per the advice in the link above)?

The same dialogue box tells me "Note that you will be able to undo this operation later if you wish" so I'm tempted to do it, but I don't want to without expert advice first.

Also, if I select "Install Now" I get the following message:

No root file system is defined.

Please correct this from the partitioning menu.

I doubt if there are any clues here, but maybe there are...

Hold on, maybe there is: if you look at Drives, it says USB /dev/sda and then goes on to describe the USB. Does this mean that, for whatever reason, the installer does not see the internal hard drive of the machine and only sees the USB?

There are issues with support for this hardware, see the following thread : viewtopic.php?f=46&t=262866
Mint 18.3 ships with kernel 4.10 which will not recognise the internal hard drive, as you have found.

There are two options :
- simplest : wait for Mint 19 in May/June
- if you cant wait, you will need to manually put a newer kernel on your live USB, e.g. 4.13 which is available in the repositories.
(this tutorial is supposed to tell you how to do the latter : https://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/1784. I haven't tested it though)
