New user cannot install Mint

Post by astronaute »

Hi there,

I wanted to install an easy to use Linux distro, friends told me Mint meets that criteria.

I downloaded latest version Linux Mint 18.3 "Sylvia" - Cinnamon (64-bit), and created the boot USB drive.

When booting, I get the following error:
Untitled2.jpg
I must admit, it's not very user friendly. I have no idea what went wrong nor what should I do.

I truly hope it's not a beginning of search for solutions to all kind of weird issues all over the web. I tried Mint like five years ago and abandoned because of the lack of user friendliness even in error messages. I mean, I'm advanced user by all means, just not on Linux. And come on, even I am not able to install it on my own computer without asking for help.

Sorry for the rant, but it's the opposite of what I consider user friendly.

Thank you for helping!

No need for rants at this point! I'm assuming the picture is from booting the USB and not booting the computer, post-install.

When you downloaded the LM .ISO file, did you verify the checksum?

What did you use to burn the .ISO file to the USB?

What are the specs of the target machine for the install (i.e., UEFI, graphics chip, etc.)?

Are you going to install as a dual-boot with something elase?

Hello astronaute and Welcome to Linux Mint Forums,
Good to have your here.
Sorry your having trouble. But it should be able to be overcome.
From the screen shot you posted it looks like you have an Nvidia graphics card of some sort. Nvidia card take some special care to get going in Linux , It's not Linux's fault it has to do with the manufacturer's desire not to release their drivers as open source.
If in fact it's a Nvidia card you need to follow the instruction on the release notes found here: https://linuxmint.com/rel_sylvia_cinnamon.php
Scroll down to the section tittled

Code: Select all

Solving freezes during the boot sequence
follow the instructions there. Good Luck :)

Hi,

Your assumptions are correct, error message appear as soon as I try to boot from USB.

I didn't verify the checksum but now I did and it's OK.

I used the UUI to burn the .ISO to the USB

My graphic chip is Nvidia Geforce 1080 GTX, and BIOS mode is UEFI.

Dual boot with Windows 10 which is currently already installed.

Thank you kc1di, you are right I have Nvidia 1080 GTX!
I'll try to set "nomodeset" immediately and report back.

OK, so this is the result with "nomodeset":

Still black screen at the end and my monitor is all black.

Am I making progress? ^^

yes your making progress. the Gtx1080 card is a particular bear to get going in linux but it can be done.
first try it again with
Try with "nouveau.noaccel=1" instead of "nomodeset".
if that works do the install and follow the instructions below:

(Note: you may have to hit the ESC key repeatedly during boot to get to the grub screen.)
start boot and at the grub screen select advanced and then select recovery mode. This will bring you to a screen showing a list of options. select network and make sure you can connect to the internet. once that is done select root. This will take you to a root terminal and should ask you for your password or sign in info. enter it. once signed in enter the following commands one at a time.

Code: Select all

apt update

Code: Select all

 apt purge nvidia
(note it may or may not find anything.)

Code: Select all

 apt install nvidia-367
nest reboot by typing:

Code: Select all

shutdown -r now
it should now boot into your desktop.

If nouvear.noccel=1 does not work they do the nvidia driver install as outlined but instead of rebooting at the end
type

Code: Select all

exit
and when you get back to the options page select resume. They do the install.
good luck.

Results with nouveau.noaccel=1 (still black screen at the end, a little bit different):

And the screenshot just before the black screen:

I'm trying with ESC and SHIFT to enter GRUB menu to no avail.

At what time during boot should I see the GRUB menu?

start pressing the esc key as soon at it starts booting and press repeatedly. until menu appears.
if ESC key does not work try Tab key.

After I select boot from USB, I see the countdown for Mint menu.
If I touch my keyboard it shows the menu where I can type TAB and enter the "nouveau.noacel=1".

So it is AFTER I set "nouveau.noacel=1" and type enter that I start spamming ESC and/or TAB and/or SHIFT?

I'm trying that right now.

It doesn't work, I even tried to spam ESC / TAB / SHIFT just after selecting boot from USB, to no avail.

ok when you see the mint logo hit esc and you should see a menu where the second item is compatiblility Mode. try that one and see if it allows you to get to a desktop
if it does make sure you have an internet connection and go to menu > Adminstration > driver manager and install nvidia driver that is recommended.

I guess the computer has an recent Intel CPU. Use modprobe.blacklist=nouveau instead, also remove splash parameter.

If modprobe.blacklist=nouveau still ends up to black screen try modprobe.blacklist=nouveau nomodeset

Proceed with installation, on first startup use same parameters. Install recommended Nvidia driver from Driver Manager utility and reboot normally. If still black screen use nomodeset parameter.

You are booting the installation media in Legacy mode, secure boot is disabled in this mode. If you plan to install LM in UEFI mode then check the Secure Boot feature is disabled in the computer bios setup otherwise the Nvidia driver won't load.

Hi, thank you for jumping in :)

Unfortunately it still ends with black screen but with different kind of gibberish going on before :
