Linux Mint 18.3 with Cinnamon ERRORS

Post by Melodicus »

Hi I finally got fed up with Windows 10 and decided to pull the trigger on Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon.
I already got to the point of install during the live boot off a 4gb usb flash drive but I am running into errors. It seems to not like my 16gb SSD and in GParted it is showing unallocated. This was the drive I used for the systems install in Windows initially. My partitions with Windows was 16gb ssd for OS, 500gb HDD for C:/ , and 500gb HDD for D:/. Id like to still use my SSD strictly for root partition (is 16GB big enough? Im seeing a lot of folks setting up 30GB root partitions), 10GB allocation on HDD for swap, and The rest for Home partition.

here are my system specs:

Id like to still use my SSD strictly for root partition (is 16GB big enough? Im seeing a lot of folks setting up 30GB root partitions), 10GB allocation on HDD for swap, and The rest for Home partition. Im very new to this whole Linux thing but I am already impressed with the live boot installer. It alone is blowing Spyware/Malware 10 (Windows) out of the park.

You have a very non-mainstream high-end Gamer laptop that has a hybrid SSHD, ie a 16GB SSD Flash-drive for cache storage and a 1TB HDD combo. I'm afraid, it may be difficult to impossible to install LM on such a hybrid SSHD. The 16GB SSD is for cache storage, and not for installing or storing the OS. Please refer to ...
https://www.eightforums.com/threads/sys ... che.22560/ (= the SSHD requires proprietary Intel disks drivers, eg Intel RST)

The fix for AMD graphics cards ... viewtopic.php?f=46&t=122257
https://linuxmint.com/rel_sonya_cinnamon.php

So, try installing LM 18.3 on the 1TB HDD without the Intel disks drivers = the 16GB SSD cache can't be used, ie select AHCI disk mode(= not RAID mode) in UEFI-BIOS setup. You can also try unplugging the 16GB SSD from the laptop before installing LM.
.
.
.
If you want to single-boot LM 18.3, it's better to use Legacy BIOS install/MBR-disk mode by enabling CSM or Legacy BIOS in UEFI-BIOS setup, and you should use the manual "Something else" install method. Manually partition the disk accordingly and ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is the 1TB HDD = /sda.
....... If using UEFI install/GPT-disk mode, you need to also manually create an EFI Boot Partition(= fat32/550MB/mount point is boot/efi) at the beginning of the disk and ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is this partition, usually at /sda1.

The automatic "Erase disk and install LM" method is not recommended for a larger 1TB HDD because the LM Installer will auto-create a huge / or Root or System partition = slower system. This method will auto-create a / and Swap partitions, ie no Home partition, on the 1TB HDD.

The disk mode can be changed from GPT to MBR or vv, by using the built-in GParted program on the Live LM 18.3 USB/DVD, ie >Create New Partition Table >ms-dos >Apply.

Ensure that Secure Boot, Fast Boot and CSM(or Legacy BIOS) are disabled in BIOS setup, Fast Startup is disabled in Win 10/8.1(>Control Panel >Power options), the Live LM media(DVD or USB-stick) is booted in UEFI mode in BIOS setup.

To dual-boot, you only need to pre-shrink the Windows partition if you intend to use the manual "Something else" install method, ie no need to do so if you intend to use the automatic "install LM alongside Windows Boot Manager" method, which will be followed by the LM Installer auto-partitioning the disk and auto-installing the Linux Grub bootloader onto the Windows ESP. Only a root / and swap partition will be auto-created with a total default size of about 20GB. The user will be given the option to increase this default size by moving a slider on the colored Partition table, subject to the maximum available free space in the Windows partition.

For the "Something else" install method, manually partition the pre-shrunk free space accordingly, eg 50GB for /, 1.5X RAM size for Swap(at the end of this space) and 200GB for Home; and ensure that the "Device for boot loader installation" is the Windows EFI System Partition(= ESP = fat32/about 104MB/mount point is /boot/efi) which is usually dev/sda1.

Re: Linux Mint 18.3 with Cinnamon ERRORS

The recommended size for the root partition is 20 GB but 16GB should suffice for common usage. With 8GB of RAM you can set up a swap of few GB, say 2 to 4GB. If you plan to use hibernation, does not work with all hardware, you must set up a swap space at least the ram size, 8GB + some MB.

The problem I see with your hardware is the AMD graphics card, new amdgpu-pro driver does not suport mobile gpu's and available default ati/radeon driver does not perform so well from what I have read.

Thank you for all your help @michael louwe. I tried everything you suggested but with no avail. It did put me on the correct track though. I FOUND THE FIX!
First off I upgraded the 500GB HDD I was using for my previous /C: drive in windows to a Samsung 1TB SSD. Then I installed Linux Mint on that drive letting the installer do all the partitioning. I know that's not ideal but "Something Else" did not appreciate my extra 500GB HDD.
Anyways, after running the fix for the slideshow install-freeze LM installed fine. Until I rebooted...
Your message about my AMD graphics cards all of a sudden made sense. I tried using the fix you suggested on that page which did not work for me. Then I found about 3 or for more similar "fixes". Still nothing. Then i stumble upon the boot-repair program. Getting this installed had it's own kinks but eventually I got it and ran the program and BOOM! FIXED!!!

Im officially a Linux Man! Thank you for the help! :D :D :D
