SOLVED: Mint 18.3 boots to CLI

Post by GWH » Fri Mar 02, 2018 5:17 pm

First post, transitioning from Windows to Linux. I did a clean install from a live USB and was able to boot successfully a few times, but now I'm stuck !

I get past the Grub menu but the next screen looks like a terminal session. Text says:

Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia server tty1
server login:

I can enter the user name and password, but after many hours of searching, can't find how to launch the GUI.

Thanks for any help; sorry for the dumb question.

In the Grub bootloader menu, select Advanced options and try to boot with Recovery mode. Does that work?

Each of the options - check / clean / update Grubb - takes me back to the same CLI.

I suspect there is a hardware problem here, maybe the mobo specifically embedded GPU.

I'm going to add a vid card and see what happens. Thanks for your reply.

"how to launch the GUI" The command startx has worked for a long time. It's still in Mint 18.3 too...
mute@mint ~ $ which startx -----> /usr/bin/startx

Thanks for the replies. Turns out to be related to:

[Firmware Bug]: TSC_DEADLINE disabled due to Errata; please update microcode to version:

In my uninformed state, it turned out to be quite a long and involved process but very informative.

The short answer is to update the intel microchip. The process is quite a bit more involved, but there's plenty of info out there which explaians it much better than I could.
