[SOLVED] Black screen after grub.

Post by serj » Sat Mar 03, 2018 6:34 am

Hello, I have LINUX Mint 18.3 KDE 64-bit, with Linux 4.10.0-38-generic. Unfortunately after some installing of python packages and update && upgrade, when I am restarting my systems stops after grub on black screen and nothing happens. I am able to enter in recovery mode and tryed to make update && upgrade once again but did not help. Could somebody suggest how I can find the problem and how to solve it?

Please go to the recovery mode shell and type the following command and if possible post the output.
if not take a photo of the output and post that.

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
thanks.
if the above is not possible. Please give us as much information about your system as possible. specially the graphics card in use.

Thanks the part I'm most interested in is the video card.
Do you know what it is and what driver is being used?

try this command:

Code: Select all

lspci | grep -i --color 'vga\|3d\|2d'

you have an Intel video card and it's well supported in the kernel so I don't believe that is the problem.

Since I do not have KDE installed I can't try anything that resembles your problem. But perhaps someone else will chime in with an answer soon.
Good Luck.

What appens when you select Resume from the recovery menu ? Can you see error messages ? Press the escape key when screen turns black, can you then see error messages ?

light display manager is not starting - You can try reinstalling it or it should be using sddm you can install sddm by boot to the safemode and install it from there
or you can go to the advance mode and boot to recovery mode and it will bring up a page that lists options first go to network and connect to the internet when that is finished go to root - you will be give a root terminal from there do this

Code: Select all

apt install sddm
if will ask you which windows manager you want to use as default select sddm.

it does not look like you are connected to the internet can you connect via ethernet temporarily?
if not you need to go to the hit esc as the machine is boot to grub to get to the grub menu Then select advanced then recovery
then follow the instruction in my last post.

Recently something goes wrong after the updates.
Try this from live usb > terminal >

Code: Select all

sudo su
Find your os partition with,

Code: Select all

blkid
and then,

Code: Select all

fsck -y /dev/sdxx
where sdxx is your os root partition,
after that
reboot

Lightdm display manager fails to start, look at the output of the suggested command for details. Press Ctrl-Alt-F2 or Ctrl-Alt-F3, log in and execute the suggested command :

Code: Select all

sudo systemctl status lightdm.service
