Mint 18.3 64bit on a Macbook 2.1

Post by vpincini »

Hi everyone

I have installed Mint Cinnamon 64 bit on a Macbook 2.1 (late 2006).
Everything went smooth except for a small but very puzzling detail: the isight webcam.

I am an experienced Linux user and this is not my first linux installation on that macbook.
I know how to install isight firmware.
Infact my isight webcam works like a charm with Cheese.
The problem is that it is not working with Skypeforlinux.

I have tried with the repository version, the flatpak version, the deb downloaded directly from Skype website.
No luck.
After intense researches on the web I found a lot of "solutions" which involve using an environment variable name LD_PRELOAD.
I have tried about 8 version of them with no result at all.

I am seriously running out of options and any suggestion would be really appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi,
If cheese is working, it's a software bug in skype. The system itself is fine.
Have a look at the following links, it seems people had the same problem, and at least for some of them it was solved by using a previous skype version
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/sky ... 68a?auth=1
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/sky ... e86?auth=1
(if this is not sufficient, then it's beyond my experience)

I have investigated the chance of downgrading Skype (at this point it is sure it's its problem) but I was not able to find a version of the 8 branch before the actual one (8.17).
I have found the latest of the 4 branch (4.3) but it crashes as soon as I do login.
Funny thing: if I plug in an external usb webcam (without unloading isight firmware) it simply takes over and everything start working.
I am going to think I really have to wait until Microzozz release a Skype update

Maybe try the versions here :
http://mirror.cs.uchicago.edu/skype/poo ... eforlinux/
or here
https://repo.skype.com/deb/pool/main/s/skypeforlinux/
(I didnt make any background check that these are legit versions)

Hi
thanks fabien85 for finding what I was not able to.

I have tried to install the first of the 8 branch (8.9.0.1) and the result is the same.
I have tried also the last of the 5 branch (5.5.01) and when I run it it says: "This version is supported anymore".

I guess I have to figure out a different approach.

Cheers
