Shutdown Lenovo Ideapad 100 often hangs.

Post by wimduk »

Issue
The shutdown process of my Lenovo Ideapad 100 working under Linux Mint 18.2 Sonya is not working properly.
The laptop stays in the shutdown process in 80% of the cases. I have to shut down the laptop by pressing the start button for a long time, of course I'm not happy with that.

I'm afraid this awkward shutdown process can damage my file system. Running the "SysRq key Process" at this time
(1. Hold CTRL + ALT, 2. Press and release SysRQ, 3. Press: R E S S O O (to shut the machine off)) does not work. But maybe I'm not doing something right.

I have this shutdown problem on several of my Linux Mint computers, while others of my Linux Mint computers do not have this problem.
So confusion everywhere. Searching the internet for the solution leads in many cases to the version of the Linux kernel used.

...some notes:
1) ...for correct REISUO => http://blog.kember.net/articles/reisub- ... x-restart/
2) ...when shutting down, when it appears to hang, press ESC, make a note of the messages displayed, and post them here...
3) ...only the latest 4.4.x or the latest 4.13.x are supported & receive bug fixes...

Edit: With a bit of googling...a workaround appears to exist here:
http://tuxicate.blogspot.com/2015/12/ub ... iby_9.html

PS: ...and with some more digging:
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gr/en/prod ... s/DS102802
Fixes applied since then compared to your BIOS version (CCCN18WW):
CCCN19WW
Fixed:
1. Disable ExitBootServiceEvent for reduce the Windows boot time.

CCCN20WW
Fixed:
1. [Important] Update includes some security fix£¨PCR# PCR802066090).
2. [Important] Update includes some security fix£¨PCR# PCR802139045).
3. [Important] Update includes some security fix£¨PCR# PCR802139048).

CCCN21WW
Fixed:
1. [Important] Update includes some security fix PCR# PCR802251819).
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 'Disable ExitBootServiceEvent for reduce the Windows boot time' is related & would take care of it.
Still, start by trying out the workaround mentioned in the Tuxicate blog, and by pressing ESC while shutting off to see the messages....

Hello thx-1138,

Until now, I did not find sufficient time to go through your advises in detail.
We are now preparing our trip back from Spain to Germany (we are Dutch and retired) where we run a small Bed & Breakfast in the summer period.
I'll take the laptop with me and go through your advises in detail when we are back home.

So stayed tuned.

With kind regards,

Hello thx-1138,

Until yesterday I could not find the time and the sense of priority to look deeper in the shutdown problems of my Lenovo laptop. Shame on me! :)
A major handicap is that English is not my mother language and the Tuxicate - linux tweaks document is a very technical and complicated for me.
I was a bit afraid to change the BIOS, you never knows what will happen and what then the consequences are!

I made an abstract from the Tuxicate advice (which I will upload), carried out the activities, and my shutdown problems are solved. GREAT!.

Many, many thanks for your help

Huge Thanks for that valuable hint.
It ended an odyssey.
Worked for me on Lenovo Ideapad 305-15IBY.
Shutdown / Restart is now working.
