Install Time for 18.3 Upgrading from 17.3 [SOLVED]

Post by White Phoenix » Fri Mar 30, 2018 3:39 am

I decided to use the install icon from the Control Center. I started the install around 10 am yesterday. There is still an Install as superuser box in the middle of the screen detecting file systems. I did this before on an earlier version of Mint, but I don’t remember it taking anywhere near this long. There is activity in the screen, but it’s going on 18 hours now.

I don’t see any way of backing out now without problems, but I would like to know if there will be a successful upgrade eventually. If it’s going to be much longer, I have some errands to do today that I can do while I wait.

This is on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Right now the last few messages are:

CRON[20386]: (root) CMD ( [ -x /usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ] && [ -x /usr/lib/php5/sessionclean ] && [ -d /var/lib/php5 ] && /usr/lib/php5/sessionclean /var/lib/php5 $( usr/lib/php5/maxlifetime ))

UPDATE:
I went to bed soon after the last post. I got up about a half hour ago and just now checked the status. The last line now reads:

cracklib: no dictionary update necessary.

So, I am guessing when upgrading from inside the current installation the install routine is now programmed to methodically check the entire system to “see” what to update. It looks as if this is going to take awhile. Maybe even the rest of today. This is fine as it would mean the goal is to have as smooth of a transition as possible.

generally speaking - - you should *not* do an in-place upgrade to LM18x from LM17x
- you should only do a Clean Installation / re-install from a Live media.

you can do, and should do, an in-place upgrade within a series though:
- LM17.1 - LM17.2 - LM17.3
- LM18.1 - LM18.2 - LM18.3
these should take less than an Hour to achieve.

Well, now I know, but it is probably too late for me to stop it now. I will keep it in mind for the future though.
- LM17.1 - LM17.2 - LM17.3
- LM18.1 - LM18.2 - LM18.3
these should take less than an Hour to achieve.
It would have been a little less since I am going from 17.3 to 18.3.

The backup battery alarm went off and I had to reset the battery. This of course, interrupted the install procedure for Linux. As it turns out I didn’t lose anything. That means I could have canceled the install at any time and started over properly.
