Problem booting. I get to the grub prompt after using boot-repair and gbparted

Good morning,

I am not sure why the booting issues started. It seems that it started shortly after (a few days) I removed a line I had created in the mounting script (at fstab) to mount a usb drive on startup. I'm not sure if it's connected to that.

I am running Linux Mint 17 (only).

Originally I was having trouble with booting and it would leave me in the initramfs prompt and the file systems weren't mounted at this point.

This is when I first used the boot repair CD. The message I received at the end was that the booting had been repaired, but that the boot files where far from the start of the disk and that the BIOS may not detect them, and that I should create a /boot partition at the start of the disk.

After this first use of the boot repair CD, I was getting messages of kernel panic and was still unable to boot.

The below contains the output of the use of the boot repair CD.
URL: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/R5q97Gd736/

I followed the advice and created a 1GB partition at the start of the disk via gParted, and then ran the boot repair tool again with separate /boot partition option.

URL: http://paste.ubuntu.com/p/WFjyQQbtTT/

Now I land in the grub prompt. My new partition (sda3) has the /grub directory, while the old partition has all the remaining files (sda1).

So I try

Code: Select all

grub> set root=(hd0,1)
grub> linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.16.0-28-generic root=/dev/sda1
grub> initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.16.0-28-generic
grub> boot
but I get into a few errors:

EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
bin/sh: 0: can't access tty; job control turned off

At this point I'm feeling a bit helpless. Do you think you could give me some ideas?

I tried updating grub, but during the process lconfig couldn't be found.

I'm quite newbie, so any help would be appreciated. I am thinking of creating yet another partition and re-installing linux and then try to recover the data in the original partition.

Thanks,

Ignacio

Follow this tutorial.
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=265557
When you enter your system run.

Code: Select all

sudo su

Code: Select all

grub-install /dev/sda

Code: Select all

update-grub
Because your Mint is sda1.

Code: Select all

fsck -y /dev/sda1
Reboot.

Hi asinoro, thank you for your reply.

I followed your instructions, but was unsuccessful at the end sadly.

It went fine in general.

The command lsb_release -a returned my Mint release info, but started with
No LSB modules are available
Not sure if that's of any importance.

Then re typed

Code: Select all

sudo su
(your instructions had it in the link as well) with the following result
sudo: unable to resolve host mint
.
I'm guessing that this has to do with typing this twice?

Then all went smooth until the last step: fsck -y /dev/sda1
Full response:
fsck from util-linux 2.20.1
e2fsck 1.42.9 (4-Feb-2014)
/dev/sda1 is mounted
e2fsck: Cannot continue, aborting
After this I tried rebooting regardless of the message above, it went past grub, but could not boot and got the following set of outputs:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init| exitcode=0x00007f00

CPU: 0 PID: 1 Comm: sh Not tainted 3.16.0-28-generic #38-Ubuntu
Hardware name: EDsys EDASK8400/DQ45CB, BIOS CBQ4510H.86A.0123.2010.0706.0858 07/06/2010
Then a series of ffff8800...s
Then
Call Trace:
dump_stack+0x45/0x56
panic+0xc8/0x1fc
do_exit+0xa57/0xa60
do_group_exit+0x3f/0xa0
Sys_exit_group+0x14/0x20
system_call_fastpath+0x1a/0x1f
With the last 6 lines preceded by a [<fffffffff81......>]
then
Kernel Offset: 0x0 from 0xffffffff81000000 (relocation range: 0xffffffff80000000-0xffffffffbfffffff)
drm_kms_helper: panic occurred, switching back to text console
And there it stopped, no prompts.

(there might be typos due to transcription)

Any clues?

Thanks again

Try again from live usb > terminal >

Code: Select all

sudo su
and then,

Code: Select all

fsck -y /dev/sda1
after that
reboot

Hi asinoro,

Those commands worked well, no errors, but at rebooting I fall in the same Kernel panic, same output as before.

This looks bad. I suggest not trying anything else at all on that drive until someone here can either help you with recovery tools or explain how this could make any sense.

I do hope you have your important files backed up.

Very sorry and hope I'm wrong!

Does that mean that my file system is over writing itself?

I don't know how it landed there to be honest. Probably creating the new partition through gParted?

I didn't get why you brought up the zRam link there?

Via live CD I can access the home folder and files in it, at least the couple I tried. Some folders are not accessible due to permissions as I suppose I'm not navigating as an admin.

Thank you for your support.

All of them from the live usb how the tutorial shows.
To remove zram? From live usb you can see with the blkid command.
http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/le ... 00565.html
and make a new swap and change the new UUID at your fstab file?
And after that to update and upgrade or to install the ukuu kernel?
Or to backup your files and to make a new installation?

Sorry asinoro, I am completely lost there.

If you could help me (and I would really appreciate it) I would need a step by step set of instructions.

Many thanks

I assume you have backed up your most important files.
Follow exactly the procedure and post things how I ask if not I will not continue.
From live usb run this command and post it by copy and paste selecting the symbol </> at forum text editor as it is the code below.

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l ; lsblk --sort name --output name, label, partlabel, size, fstype, mountpoint, state ; blkid

Hi asinoro,

I have backed up my files.

I have a Live CD (the original one) as opposed to a live usb. I'm dowloading Mint 18.3 to create a live usb.

I'll run those commands later and revert. Thanks

Hi asinoro, first question:

Code: Select all

sudo parted -l ; lsblk --sort name --output name, label, partlabel, size, fstype, mountpoint, state ; blkid
Model: ATA WDC WD3200KS-00P (scsi)
Disk /dev/sda: 320GB
Sector size (logical/physical): 512B/512B
Partition Table: msdos
Disk Flags:

Number Start End Size Type File system Flags
 3 1049kB 1050MB 1049MB primary ext4
 1 1050MB 316GB 315GB primary ext4 boot
 2 316GB 320GB 4157MB extended
 5 316GB 320GB 4157MB logical linux-swap(v1)

Warning: The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but
Linux says it is 512 bytes.
Ignore/Cancel?

iegarcia,

Boot the live media, open the terminal and paste back the results of sudo blkid

OK, now run sudo mount -v /dev/sda1 /mnt and then paste back ls -lh /mnt/boot
