Good morning,

I am not sure why the booting issues started. It seems that it started shortly after (a few days) I removed a line I had created in the mounting script (at fstab) to mount a usb drive on startup. I'm not sure if it's connected to that.

I am running Linux Mint 17 (only).

Originally I was having trouble with booting and it would leave me in the initramfs prompt and the file systems weren't mounted at this point.

This is when I first used the boot repair CD. The message I received at the end was that the booting had been repaired, but that the boot files where far from the start of the disk and that the BIOS may not detect them, and that I should create a /boot partition at the start of the disk.

After this first use of the boot repair CD, I was getting messages of kernel panic and was still unable to boot.

I followed the advice and created a 1GB partition at the start of the disk via gParted, and then ran the boot repair tool again with separate /boot partition option.

Now I land in the grub prompt. My new partition (sda3) has the /grub directory, while the old partition has all the remaining files (sda1).

So I try

grub> boot

but I get into a few errors:

EXT4-fs (sda1): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null)

Target filesystem doesn't have requested /sbin/init.
bin/sh: 0: can't access tty; job control turned off

At this point I'm feeling a bit helpless. Do you think you could give me some ideas?

I tried updating grub, but during the process lconfig couldn't be found.

I'm quite newbie, so any help would be appreciated. I am thinking of creating yet another partition and re-installing linux and then try to recover the data in the original partition.

Because your Mint is sda1.

Reboot.

I followed your instructions, but was unsuccessful at the end sadly.

It went fine in general.

The command lsb_release -a returned my Mint release info, but started with

No LSB modules are available

Not sure if that's of any importance.

Then re typed

I'm guessing that this has to do with typing this twice?

Then all went smooth until the last step: fsck -y /dev/sda1

After this I tried rebooting regardless of the message above, it went past grub, but could not boot and got the following set of outputs:

Those commands worked well, no errors, but at rebooting I fall in the same Kernel panic, same output as before.

This looks bad. I suggest not trying anything else at all on that drive until someone here can either help you with recovery tools or explain how this could make any sense.

I do hope you have your important files backed up.

Does that mean that my file system is over writing itself?

I don't know how it landed there to be honest. Probably creating the new partition through gParted?

I didn't get why you brought up the zRam link there?

Via live CD I can access the home folder and files in it, at least the couple I tried. Some folders are not accessible due to permissions as I suppose I'm not navigating as an admin.

All of them from the live usb how the tutorial shows.
To remove zram? From live usb you can see with the blkid command.

and make a new swap and change the new UUID at your fstab file?
And after that to update and upgrade or to install the ukuu kernel?
Or to backup your files and to make a new installation?

I assume you have backed up your most important files.
Follow exactly the procedure and post things how I ask if not I will not continue.
From live usb run this command and post it by copy and paste selecting the symbol </> at forum text editor as it is the code below.

I have backed up my files.

I have a Live CD (the original one) as opposed to a live usb. I'm dowloading Mint 18.3 to create a live usb.
