[Solved] Verifying 18.3: "sha256sum" is not recognized ...

Post by ladyonthemoon » Sat May 05, 2018 4:48 am

I've just downloaded the "linuxmint-18.3-cinnamon-64bit.iso" and am trying to verify it. I'm following the instructions that I found here: https://linuxmint.com/verify.php, downloaded the recommanded files, put them into an ISO folder and when I run the command, after navigating to the folder, I get the message from windows that sha256sum is not recognised.

I'm using Windows 7 SP1, up to date, French version. Here is the image of the command window so that you see how I did it. The text says ""sha256sum" is not recognized as an internal or external command, an executable program or a batch file" as explained in the title.

Thank you for your help! :)

Those instructions were written for someone using Linux. There is a tutorial on how to use Windows to verify an .iso file:

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

Ah, thank you.

No free solution available?

I thought that was free. From the Gpg4win site: " Gpg4win (GNU Privacy Guard for Windows) is Free Software and can be installed with just a few mouse clicks."

Okay, I used WinHash to calculate the SHA256 and it worked.

Sorry for the bother.

Here's some more info on how the verification works (in Linux, but the theory is the same in Windows):

Verifying the hash is only half of the process - the other half is to verify the signature of the hash code file to be sure that it is really from Linux Mint. See the fred-barclay link in my previous post for an explanation.

The instructions are the same as the ones in the link I posted in my first post and they require use of the gpg software.

I'll do without; I downloaded the iso here; I do not expect a problem.

Thanks for your help!

Off topic question: how to you upload a custom avatar here?

I tried uploading my avatar on an image site and pasted the url but it doesn't work.

Well, you were on the right track... Was the image too large maybe, or did the URL start with HTTP instead of HTTPS? I vaguely remember reading somewhere that that might be a factor.

Mine is on https://imgbb.com.

Still doesn't work. I'm getting a "url invalid" even if I upload it on the page your suggest. The image has the right size and weight. Okay, I give up on that. :)
