Cannot change boot order on dual boot machine..updated....need help.<Solved...kinda>

Howdy, I will try to get as much info in the post as I can. I have installed Mint 18.3 alongside windows, crashed Sylvia, and just reinstalled another copy. So far, so good. No problem for me. I gave the laptop to my wife because she wants to try Linux. I need the machine to boot into Syliva, but cannot get rid of the other entries.

I have done several searches, followed the directions, used grub customizer to delete all the entries except Mint 18.3, Windows10, and set up. Saved, updated. The machine is still booting to the crashed copy of Mint.

My best guess is I have edited the wrong file and am booting from a different file than I edited, or the oem install I am using is the problem. I snapped some photos that hopefully will help.


UPDATE......I think I have narrowed the problem down.....I believe the machine is using the grub file from the crashed install...I have updated the grub file on the working copy of Sylvia.....now, how do I get the file where it needs to be?

Well, after a few conversations with a VERY gracious member of the community the best educated guess is the machine is booting from the crashed partition that I cannot edit grub in.

With nothing else to lose I deleted the partition that contained the crashed install and, after a few error messages cannot boot at all.


I went into bios and selected the Windows bootloader as1st boot selection and can boot to Horrible10. I will delete all the linux partitions and start over with a clean install.

I thought I would update this as "solved" in case anyone else runs into the same problems.

Hi, Glockdoc.

The correct grub filenames which you wanted to mention 2 posts above are:
/boot/grub/grub.cfg - this is the config file which sudo update-grub re-creates whenever it is executed. So do not edit it manually.
/etc/default/grub - this is where you can set parameters which sudo update-grub will honour when recreating /boot/grub/grub.cfg
Note:
The initial slash / at the beginning of a pathname is meaningful and may make all the difference. (Hint: fully qualified pathname vs. relative pathname)

Help! I am a newbie to this forum as well as a relatively new newbie to Linux & using a dual boot with Linux Mint 17.4 and Windows 7.

I can't figure out how to post a new topic (I read the FAQ but couldn't find the "New Topic" button or link to click on after searching for quite some
time. So, I am posting here since this topic is related to mine. I had an acquaintance create a dual boot system
for me with Linux Mint 17.4 and Windows 7. I had expected there to be a boot menu (not sure if that's the correct term) each time so I could
choose which OS to go with. Right now it's set up to go to Linux. The only way I can get it to Windows is to boot it to Linux, restart it and hit
the F9 key repeatedly. Then I get the boot menu and I can choose which OS I want.

I was told I need to edit the grub file but is there a way to have that menu come up each time?
