locked bios and a new hard drive
I bought a laptop and short of taking out the hard drive and using another laptop to install linux, i have tried everything to install linux. my question is about puttign a new hard drive in. there is no way to change the settings to allow for installing using a usb port or a dvd drive. so if i put a blank hard drive in,will i be able to force the laptop to use a usb port to load linux? thanks in advance for any help.

Re: locked bios and a new hard drive
I doubt it, the BIOS doesn't need to refer to the hard-drive for instructions. Someone may already know how to unlock the machine, if you say what it is...
Re: locked bios and a new hard drive
i already asked and i got no where. but thanks for the answer.
Re: locked bios and a new hard drive
Without knowing the make and model of your laptop, it's difficult for us to help with "unlocking" the BIOS. If it's a new machine it will almost certainly have UEFI rather than BIOS; some e.g. Acer require an admin password to be set before you can access the boot settings.

Re: locked bios and a new hard drive
In the title of this thread we see that the BIOS is "locked". Is it really pass word protected or are you (the OP) simply unaware of how to open it in the normal manner? I am curious to know what exactly you mean by "locked".
