HP IQ500

Post by dave8671 » Fri Jun 01, 2018 4:59 pm

A friend asked me to look at this HP all-in-one. Main uses would be going online and watching video. It has windows vista and its not in good shape. I used the live CD of mate 18.3 and it found all the hardware. SO I was going to install mate but I want to know the about the following.

The HDD health I use crsytaldiskinfo tool and shows all green can I rely on that? pic attached.

The next question is the open source driver is selected by default its this the one I should Use pic attached.

Still learning about drivers in Linux. I need to understand the process.

I was thinking I should wait till after the updates installed including the kernel update before drivers are installed.

Hi,
If the live disk worked well and the install went well then I would wait until after the upgrade and then install the recommended driver for the Nvidia card. Nouveau is a great driver but it does not alway play well with some cards.

Yes, do the updates first - then the driver install. If the driver gives you trouble at boot-up, follow the advice here in the release notes (scroll down to "Solving freezes":
https://www.linuxmint.com/rel_sylvia_mate.php

Some systems (like mine, for example) using an nvidia driver may need to make the "nomodeset" parameter permanent so it applies at every boot-up. That's easy to do - if you find that you need to do that, come back and ask how. :)
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they ain't.

Well Install the recommend Nvidia driver 340 which booted fine. Now the system freezes and the mouse and keyboard are non responsive. I have to reboot to get it back up. the system keeps freezing up not that I did not expect it to though. Oh I installed cinnamon not mate btw I labeled my disc wrong . Seems the open source driver worked better really though the screen savers will not work correctly.

I use the driver manager to go back to the open source nvidia driver and all is well again. No freezes or lockups. Now the screen savers work now.
