kernel cleaning problems [nevermind]
[I've elected to wipe and put the beta of 19.0 Cinnamon on, so disregard this thread]
I'm trying different ways to clean out old kernels and nothing is working and I cannot update my kernel, I tried this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=270858&p=1479473&h ... s#p1479473
Also, I don't know the numbering convention so I cannot tell if something with a 4.13 is newer or older than 4.4...

I've been using Mint for over 4 years, but I'm still a slow learner. I have a website: https://pickfetish.com. It is dedicated to guitar/instrument picks.

Re: kernel cleaning problems
Apparently you have two separate issues: 1. you don't know how to get rid of old kernels, and 2. you can't update your kernel.
Let's start with number 1:

(item 8, right column)
Remove all old kernels in one big stroke?

Re: kernel cleaning problems
Does the second one also update the grub to remove references to the old kernels?

Yes, because any kernel removal automatically triggers update-grub....Spearmint2 wrote: ⤴Fri Jun 15, 2018 3:14 pm Does the second one also update the grub to remove references to the old kernels?

Re: kernel cleaning problems
Get a list of your kernels (because "mintupdate", below, doesn't list installed kernels intelligently):
Decide which ones to keep. (probably two is a good idea)
Then run this:
Then
mintupdate -> View -> Linux kernels -> pick the ones you don't want -> Remove
Everything's kinda slow in mintupdate, so give it a few seconds before you decide it's stuck.
Code: Select all
ls -l /boot/vmlinuz*
Then run this:
Code: Select all
gksudo mintupdate
mintupdate -> View -> Linux kernels -> pick the ones you don't want -> Remove
Everything's kinda slow in mintupdate, so give it a few seconds before you decide it's stuck.
Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Re: kernel cleaning problems
Yes, followed that, thank you, it's somehow failing. I've also lost use of firefox and have to use a different browser. It will boot though.
I'm not on that computer at the moment, I've got to go take care of thing and I'll come back later on to diagnose if it's ok?

Re: kernel cleaning problemsj[nevermind]
Just an update:
I just felt that the amount of trouble to recover compared to just doing a fresh install and going to Cinnamon (with the 19.0 beta) was worth it, rather than hassle. I wanted more room for my boot drive and wanted a UEFI partition too.
I have a new question but it needs and entirely different thread in a different room (VB stuff).
