How convert filesystem to btrfs?

Post by AndrzejB » Sat Jun 23, 2018 1:52 pm

I have Mint 19 Tara.
btrfs-convert - command not found
sudo apt-get install btrfs-tools
btrfs-tools is already the newest version (4.15.1-1build1).

Package btrfs-progs is needed for btrfs-convert. Beyond that I don't know what things you may need to do after converting to btrfs to make it all work.

Mint 19 Tara has not brtfs-convert.
I try use brtfs-convert with Mint 18.3:
sudo btrfs-convert /dev/sda1

I see:
/dev/sda1 is mounted

If I unmount sda1 I will not call btrfs-convert .
How do it?

Mint19 does not have btrfs-convert available... it may never have if Ubuntu have decided it's more trouble than it's worth. The command is in Debian Stretch and Debian SID if you really-really need it. The Devuan-based distribution Refracta8-Jessie fits on a CD-R.

If you are trying to convert an EXT4 to BTRFS it has to be done...

Without the ext4 changing during the conversion.
==
Without the ext4 mounted.
==
From an OS that is not 'in' the file-system being converted.
==
A Live Session Linux.

A prudent user always makes a backup of the files before starting. Why not do that, twice, and simply format the source partition BTRFS, or install Mint19 on BTRFS.

Personal Record
Data lost using EXT3: 0%
Data lost using BTRFS: 100%
Data stored in an encrypted volume will only be accessible with the original password. Without this key, all the data will remain scrambled beyond hope of recovery.

I think the best approach is to install it originally with btrfs. But if you must convert from ext4 you'll have to do it with a live dvd/usb and unmount the system being converted. I have not had good success converting the file system in the past. Thus my recommendation that you do a fresh install.
Good luck.
P.S. As has been mentioned back up everything that is important to you.

fortunately, I must not backup my data because I will test on new Mint.
I must create live cd or this live cd is an install disk?
I try install disk and if I previous insall Mint, and boot from install DVD, It ask me about user/password and my password not match to this password.

All mint cd's /dvd/usbs are live versions. I'm not sure why it's asking you for a usr name /password , but the for the live session usr name is mint and password is left blank.
good luck.

Fine!
I go to extended partitioning when I install and works.
