Upgraded from 18.3 to 19, fails to login.

Post by Janni »

Hi,

I did a Timeshift snapshot and went away with Clems instructions to upgrade from 18.3 to 19.
All seemed to go fine, but after reboot it goes into the login screen but mouse is very jerky.
When I login with my user the screen blinks and goes back to login screen again.

After trying to login with system recovery I see some hints (perhaps)

Anyway, I booted up with Mint 18.3 live CD, started up Timeshift and restored my recent snapshot.
Now back to 18.3. Life is good again.
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it ?

if it aint't broke, fix it until it is

usually you can delete .ICEauthority and .Xauthority and be able to login

I'm having the same problem of being brought back to the login screen after entering password.

I deleted .Xauthority and .ICEauthority with no change

I understand this can be a problem if the root disk is full. It is close but I still have a few gigs available.

Any other ideas?

Try booting into and older kernel using grub menu/advanced options, once booted try

Code: Select all

sudo apt install haveged
See if you can boot normally

Tried two kernels back, 4.4.0-128 with the same results.

The Live disc runs quite well, now that I have it downloaded/burned from another system. Perhaps I should do a fresh install.

I'd kinda like to figure out what happened, though.

Just tried the 4.4.0-128 kernel under recovery mode and got these errors

[FAILED] Dependency failed for /home
[FAILED] Failed to start Console System Startup Logging

I am having the same issue...really hoping I don't have to do a reinstall...

Trying a different kernel does nothing.

So far a fresh install has proved to work fine for me. Everything is working fine and looks awesome. I hope someone can figure it out for you guys.

Had the exact same problem and had to restore. I am suspecting its a xorg/gpu driver issue. I could actually login using mate instead of cinnamon. Although Mate also clearly had problems it worked enough to do the restore with timeshift.

I have and AMD card with the oibaf drivers (for vulkan support) and 4.15.18 on 18.3. So i suspect that this is the issue. When I have time I want to try and purge the gpu driver and try the upgrade again to see if that was it.

My laptop has a Radeon APU, but it was fine earlier, so not sure what happened...I don't THINK it's a graphics issue in my case? Looking at the xorg log from running startx from the command line doesn't seem to give any obvious major errors? It almost just looks like xorg starts and then immediately exits for no reason...

I don't think it's a kernel or graphic card issue. I tried to bootup in advanced mode trying different kernels.
My PC runs kernel 4.10.0-40 and Nvidia GTX 1070 with Nvidia-396 driver.
I do have a Blackmagic intensity pro that I was wondering could be the source of problems, but I see you guys have the same issue on laptops so it's not that.

I'm sure we will find the answer soon enough. Until then I'm good on 18.3 :)

Just thought I'd reply and say I gave up and reinstalled everything from scratch...

Apparently people are having luck by removing the gnome-user-share package...

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove gnome-user-share
Can anyone confirm?

I wiped my HDD and reinstalled as I was fed up, but I still have to try the upgrade on my Mint spare desktop downstairs later....if that is all it takes, I would be happy!

My upgrade failed too. Grub was not installed to the same place as the 18.3 install (/dev/sda1), it was attempted to be installed on one of my other hard drives' partitions that was formatted as NTFS.

So the upgrade failed to boot so I installed LM 19 rather than trying to trouble-shoot a failed upgrade.

Cheers

There was a recent Mesa update with Mint 18.3. When I ran the upgrade check, I was informed that the newer package would cause serious breakage if an attempt to update to Mint 19 was performed and to wait for a fixed package (or revert).

Damn, that would've been nice to know....I still want to run the upgrade on my Mint 19 desktop. Any word on when a fix will be in the works?

It was a surprise from Ubuntu, the fix is currently in their testing repos. I would think they would try to fast track this as it likely messes up 16.04 upgrades to 18.04 now

So any update on the ubuntu fix? If yes it would be useful to try again to upgrade.
