LM19 xcfe wants to boot into Fedora & Screen is jagged

Post by AZgl1500 » Sun Jul 15, 2018 12:50 pm

the host is 18.3 Cinnamon with 12gB RAM on a SSD.

I am trying to install 19 xcfe onto VirtualBox, and when I enter "linux mint 19", VB selects Fedora 64 as the type of OS.

I have been changing that to Ubuntu 64

at first, I thought I have a bad ISO, do deleted that one, and downloaded a fresh copy this morning, gtkHash says the checksum is correct.

and again, I get this ugly unusable screen so an install is impossible.

any ideas?

What version of VirtualBox are you using (latest is 5.2.14). When I just now tried to add a new VM, as soon as I typed "Linux Mint", the system version changed to "Ubuntu (64-bit)".

just looked, Version 5.1.34_

but it seemed to always work before?

Okay, I paid more attention to what is going on,
for the name of the install, I typed: Linux Mint 19 xc as the instant I typed 'fe' it switched from Unbuntu to Fedora.

I have several version installed, and I wanted xcfe as part of the name. guess I will add that after the install is done.

That version is fairly old now. I have found that VirtualBox is very sensitive to newer kernels; yours was probably built using the 4.13 branch. Give the new one a try and let me know what happens.

Purged the old VB version and installed the latest from the debi pkg for 5.2.14 r123301 (Qt5.6.1)

also noted that the Video Memory was very minimal so maxed that out to 128 mb.

Same results, the video is scrambled and can't read anything.

here is the settings for VB now

What video driver are you using? Did you turn on 3D Acceleration?

Sorry, kinda grasping at straws now. I've experienced this before, but I'll be damned if I can remember how I fixed it.

Turned on 3D, but it still came up out of sync video.

The only thing my setup has different is the video card/drivers: GeForce 960, Nvidia 396.24 drivers
I compared my Manjaro 17 settings to yours and they are identical, except I use bridged networking. What kernel are you running?

just now checked that an install of 18.3 xcfe is working just fine
and it does not have 3D turned on at all.

just for Grins, switched the network to "bridged adapter", and as I expected, that had no effect on Video Sync.

still out of sync display.

Sorry - missed that. That kernel has been the subject of many discussions, most all of them bad. Can you boot to an older one and try again?

Makes about zero sense, unless...could your ISO of XFCE be corrupt?

possible, but I downloaded it twice, and checked the sums twice.
they matched each time.

Weird that the least graphically intensive Mint DE is the one with the problems. I'm getting a headache!

While xcfe was up, and the screen out of Sync, I viewed a few things from the VB menu up above,
and the display is just fine doing that.

okay,
did a reboot with kernel Kernel: 4.13.0-45-generic x86_64 (64 bit)

and tried to get 'xcfe' to install.

same results, the display is out of Sync.

this is weird.

the host is 18.3 Cinnamon with 12gB RAM on a SSD.
Missed this as well...my system is 19 XFCE (already) with 16GB RAM! I will say this, though - when I was testing the betas of 19 Cinnamon & XFCE (also running 18.3 Cinnamon), I never had these problems.

I'm running on empty - hopefully someone else will jump in soon.

Try enabling PAE/NX under System/Processor. That's the only thing I can see obviously different to my working XFCE 19 install.
