I have a 500gB, 5400 RPM spinning disk, that I removed from my ASUS, it has 18.3 Cinnamon on it now.
Was wondering if a friend of mine would have any luck installing it and seeing if the thing would actually boot up enough to let her get the drivers properly set up?
Would it be more trouble for her than just doing a fresh install and be done with it?
She is 2,000 miles away, so me dropping over to her home is not in the cards.
has anyone tried doing something like that?
I was just wondering how versatile the boot up routines are?
Wondering if: a Toshiba laptop will boot up from an ASUS HDD?

should work just fine provided you didn't install any drivers that she doesn't have on her laptop.

This worked for me, I even had it work for Win XP when changing from one motherboard to another, but admittedly they were both AMD cpu boards with similar chipsets.

Would it not be easier just to get her to do a fresh install from a live cd, it isn't that hard, and I'm sure it would save the hassle of trying to talk her through installing said hard drive, and the potential problems with drivers. Probably cheaper than posting a hard drive, too, and less likelihood of damage at the hands of Oz post.

Re: Wondering if: a Toshiba laptop will boot up from an ASUS HDD?
the more I got to thinking about it,
I just formatted the whole disk to one partition in ext4.
that way, she can do a Fresh Install and not be needing me to lead her thru it.

using an initially installed LM on a HDD and moving from one computer to another is how I format LM onto a HDD in a Toshiba then install into MacBooks. I have done about a dozen and they all work. The rest of the upgrades and updates after the initial install from a live flash or DVD, were done in the Apples.

she gonna have issues with one partition if she needs to restore something. root/home/swap is the way to go. you can instruct her over phone to do something else when installingI just formatted the whole disk to one partition in ext4

I have a usb passport that I installed mint 18 on (with no extra drivers) and I have booted on three different machines. It is legacy install like the other three are.

Been visiting with her all day today,
she just wants to let it do a normal install to Cinnamon.
she has never worked with Linux in her life, so I think just letting it do the normal "erase disk" will be the best for her right now.
that is how I started out, let me get my feet wet while I experimented with Terminal commands and learned how to use Gparted.
I don't think I could talk her thru "Something else" via the telephone.
went thru that last night with the Dell w/Cinnamon that I sent up to my sister in Utah, had to bring up Teamviewer so I could see what she was talking about. it turned out to be an artifact in the Wallpaper she was using for a background.
