Can't format /dev/sda1 to ufs

I'm trying to format the first partition to ufs with the LiveCD, but it won't because in GParted, format to UFS is not able to click on, and when I try to use the mkfs.ufs command, it says,

Code: Select all

mkfs.ufs: /dev/sda1: could not find special device

It seems there is no support for ufs
It's not possible to format to ufs in Gparted (in an installed Gloria)

gparted does support ufs, that's why the option is there, just greyed out, it's just that ubuntu doesn't package ufs support by default. I believe you can install ufs support from the package ufsutils

Absolutely - Gparted supports ufs, but with a grayed out option :)
You have to install ufsutils as emorrp1 says
I looked in Synaptic and it is there with this warning
WARNING: This is an experimental package, it may damage your filesystem.

Completely missed that! Good spot Husse. Did a bit of googling, can't see anyone posting problems about the UFS (once installed), but yeah, only go with the experimental package if you're sure you can cope (not a light thing for a filesystem). Also, If you intend for linux to run of it, you may have to add the ufs module to the startup lists. Another potential issue includes grub not recognising (and hence not booting from) the new partition, though this might be solved with grub2, can't find any info on that.

Hmm - it strikes me - this is an old filesystem.....I think it's even from the early nineties
Why experimental? (Can't spend time googling everything)
