Use Aptik to migrate from Xubuntu 16.04 to Mint 19 xfce?

Post by Bert_N » Fri Jul 20, 2018 2:25 am

Hi,

I am currently using Xubuntu 16.04 for a while on my desktop but I would like to start using Mint xfce.

Can I use Aptik to backup my settings and home directory under Xubuntu and restore it under my clean Mint install?

Google searches give me mixed answers. Some claim that Mint and Ubuntu are too different to use Aptik, while others state it should be ok.
I am mainly after the easy migration of application config settings, like Thunderbird, Spotify, Thunar,....

Thanks!

Before you do anything back up your data. Can't comment on aptik, but if you have /home on a separate partition...
  • Select 'something else' during mint install.
  • Select the existing root partition and use it for / and select format.
  • Select your existing /home partition and use for /home in the new install, do not format it!
This should keep all your existing config files (and everything else in /home). For me this is theoretical, I assume it works, just about to try it myself :)
