no free space left on device /

Post by samiel60 »

After today updating, I met a strange trouble.
I updated and, after, I continued to work. I'd only Writer open,
no other programs. Suddenly, it appeared a message:

Code: Select all

no free space left on device /
and it was to me impossible to accomplish any operation.
The root partition was full, I don't know why and how.
I don't know which other information do u need
to help me to understand what happened...

thanx

This guy had the same problem: that message but df shows free space:
https://medium.com/@aronasorman/the-cas ... ed3816ae23

He ran

Code: Select all

sudo find /
and waited until it slowed down indicating millions of inodes in a directory, "/var/lib/docker" created by a program "docker".

Thanx for your answer. I'd no /var/lib/docker
and I was not able to idenfy the dir full, for it was impossible to me
open a console. It would be interesting and useful to understand
the reason or cause which suddenly creates so many files
in any /var/ subdirectory...

First off - - Don't Turn Off this machine .. . that will only exasperate the issue.

try running Disk Useage Analyser - - look under System Tools - - can you find it ?
- paste a copy of what is is showing - - back here

if you can't find it - - install it from Package Manager AKA synaptic
- - it's called "baobab" :)

and whilst you are using synaptic - - look at how many system kernels, that are currently installed,
- with a view to removal of some of the older kernels.

Sorry, I formatted and reinstall to save time,
for I cannot stay for some days without pc.
I realized that the big quantity of files was in /var,
but it was to me impossible to launch any program.
If it will happen another time (I hope not!)
I'll try to identify better the cause of that trouble
thanx
s

PS
in any case I had only 2 kernels installed

This will show you the # of files in /var, so you can keep an eye on them (the guy I mentioned above had 58 million or so):

Code: Select all

sudo find /var | wc -l
I get "11259" from a pretty clean setup.
(wc -l = count the lines of output)

I found multiple bug reports on this, both in Debian and Ubuntu forums; here are a couple of links:
