[Solved]cgmanager fails to start

Post by aakerbeere » Sat Jul 28, 2018 9:21 am

Hi
After upgrading to Tara I get "Failed to start Cgroup management daemon" during boot.
Using systemctl status cgmanager.service gets:

Code: Select all

● cgmanager.service - Cgroup management daemon

Jul 28 14:45:53 5CD3052XJ4 systemd[1]: Failed to start Cgroup management daemon.
I don't know if I have to eliminate and if yes I don't know how.
Some help would be great.
thx

...there is no cgmanager in Bionic / Mint 19.
Theoritically, you could try sudo systemctl disable cgmanager (or mask instead of disable)...or purge cgmanager altogether.
Since it's an upgrade though & not a clean install, i'd start by trying to disable such first.

thx

I disabled as proposed.
Error has gone. Boots without any error.
Next step will probably be to purge. Can this done by "apt-get purge cgmanager"?

...i'd say yes myself - but just in case, when doing so, do take a note of any possible dependencies removed with it...

aakerbeere, pretty much anything related to cgmanager is obsolete under Mint 19...
(ie. the reason i said to take note of dependencies is because when doing an upgrade instead of a 'clean' install,
it's certainly not unheard of ending up with newer packages half-installed and/or older ones not removed...)

Thank you thx-1138

I purged "libcgmanager0" as well as "upstart". No more issues.
I did appreciate very much your help.

Confirmed the fix:

Code: Select all

> sudo systemctl disable cgmanager.service
> sudo apt-get purge upstart libcgmanager0 cgmanager
> sudo reboot

Hello, khprakash.

I guess you misunderstood Pierr's question.
Please, execute each of the first 3 commands and post the screen output which they display:
  • sudo systemctl stop cgmanager.service
  • sudo systemctl disable cgmanager.service
  • sudo apt-get purge upstart libcgmanager0 cgmanager
Then reboot.

Best regards,
Karl
