My daughter has new laptop. Want to ditch windows and install mint.

I followed the instructions here (downloaded brand new mint 19 64 bit put on USB stick using mint tools - this seems OK). Followed instructions here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Disc ... p/3713647/ . When I get to step 8 (see "paper tapes post) it does not work. All I see is windows boot manager as the only option on the screen. I've disabled secure boot and fast boot boot mode is UEFI. Please has someone solved this?

Don't have a legacy option in bios I think I need to do this select SATA Operation AHCI instead of Intel.

or

going to try second and then report back over next day or so. Boot image is fine on USB tested on my my machine...

Ok after a lot of farting about and following these instructions

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/wi ... 546be2c82
I had an extra bios option under AHCI I think legacy support. Booting again going into windows ->s -> Update & Security -> Recovery -> Restart Now.

Then you get "Choose an option". Select "Use A Device" and I see my usb boot device. So I'm apparently all set to install which I will do tomorrow...

The problem was all the other methods corrupted the registry the numeric value for AHCI is 0 and the entries by the first method above said 3 and 0 depending on the entry (3 being intel).

Lessons learnt.

1) Getting rid of windows gets harder each time I deal with a new machine.
2) Read further before posting although it would by helpful if the person outlining the method put it all in their post in one place.
3) To install linux on a SSD you need AHCI and this gives you legacy support which is what you really need.
4) use the registry to change settings to AHCI then boot and select it in bios.
5) You don't have to be in safe mode to do this and you can get into it even if you are in windows 10 and have problems you can get into safe mode (look it up).

Will post as solved when I've installed mint 19 successfully...

Hi hhead.

Have you tried the Novo button? It might offer booting from USB when you access the boot menu that way.

If you need help, see here.

Hope that helps.

Thanks MrEn that link you gave does not work. Now installed and everything works out of box including trackball and wifi. Only problem mint 19 does not install mscorefonts with codecs.
