[SOLVED] Unable to Boot Limux Mint Cinnnamon 19 Properly From USB

Post by vw98075 » Sat Aug 11, 2018 5:08 pm

I try to install the new version Linux Mint Cinnamon on my old Dell Inspiron laptop. I use Rufus to create a bootable USB with a Linux Mint ISO. When I boot the Linux Mint, I see 6 or 7 error messages about BIOS, something like " ... not cleared by BIOS. Clearing this bit". Then, a message panel pops up. It says Cinnamon just crached. You are currently running in Fallback Mode. Do you want to restart Cinnamon". When I click Yes, it doesn't get restarted. The laptop currently has a dual boot of Windows 7 and Linux Mint Cinnamon 18. I attach the screen which shows the errors.

How to solve this problem?

How to solve this problem?
First, we need more information. From within your 18.x installation:

Post the output of this terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
Enclose the results between [ⅽode] and [/ⅽode] code markers by selecting </> from the mini toolbar above the textbox where you type your reply.

What exactly are the messages that you get about the BIOS? As it is, all we know is that you get messages about the BIOS.

Did you verify the downloaded iso using SHA256?

After I restart Windows 7 on the laptop and boot the Linux Mint again with the USB, I get the same error. (I update my original question with more details). So, I don't think the problem has anything to do with the old Linux Mint installation.

I didn't verify the download version. I didn't know such thing before. How to verify it?

Of course, neither do I, but if you won't follow simple instructions and provide the information asked for, I can't help you.

Cheers.

If I read your instruction correctly, you ask for an output from the command on a version 18.x installation. As I mentioned previously, I don't have any Linux Mint installation on the laptop. With a USB boot, I can't even have a WIFI connection. I attach a first two portions of a teminal screenshot shown an output of the command on USB boot, not an installament. (due to the attachment file size limitation, I can't get the whole screenshot up)

Sorry, when I said "After I restart Windows 7 on the laptop and boot the Linux Mint again with the USB, I get the same error", I should mention that occurred after reinstalling Windows 7, which removed the Linux Mint installament.

Assuming you have an old Legacy BIOS pre-2012 Dell laptop, did you create the Live LM 19 USB with Rufus in BIOS/MBR mode, ie not in UEFI/GPT mode.?

Or try using other programs like Universal USB Installer or Etcher or Unetbootin.

My Dell laptop was purchased before 2012. I use the BIOS mode. I won't be able to boot if a bootable USB is created with the other mode.

I have tried to create a bootable USB with LinuxLive and the outcome is the same.

Start here to verify your download to make sure the ISO is ok.
