I run Mint KDE on a laptop but find it awkward compared with my Mate install on a desktop. Its a personal thing I guess.
Is it reasonably simple to change DEs? If so, how?
Or should I start afresh? I have everything backed up.
If it is better to do a clean install, can I just install Mate over KDE from a USB live environment?

It is best to start afresh. Just install Mint Mate over top of KDE.
