Loaded Sylvia on my Win 10 Toshiba Laptop last year and needed rEFInd to be able to boot Mint. Since then, I've had both grub2 and rEFInd loaded and interestingly, when I shutdown from a windows session on next boot I get the grub2 text menu. When I shut down from Mint (or re-start windows), I get the rEFInd screen. No big deal, but curious as when booting to windows after Mint, I have no sound unless I re-start Windows (of course that could entirely be a Win10 issue) and sporadic incomplete shut-downs (again probably a Win10 issue since Fall Creator's Update and last round of Meltdown/Spectre fixes).
Guess my real question is do I really need Grub2?
Below is link that Laurent85 helped me work through to get both OS's working.

Re: Grub2 rEFInd compatibility
In principle you dont need grub if you have refind, so you could remove it.
Now your situation seems a bit complicated (I read quickly through the thread you linked), so wait for Laurent to answer as he understood your case more in depth.
