19 / 18.x Live don't work on HP Envy x360 15m with default BIOS settings

Post by fbachofner »

I just spent a frustrating day trying to boot Mint Live (19, 18.3 and 18.2) USB sticks on an HP Envy x360 15m-cn0012dx . This is high-end, very current i7-8550U based machine with only USB3 ports.

Ubuntu 18.04.01 and various other "Live" distributions worked just fine.

The post "18.x Live doesn't work on HP Envy x360?" viewtopic.php?f=46&t=254809 suggested this is a known hardware problem with USB3 ports on HP Envys.

That gave me the idea to turn on legacy mode to attempt booting Mint 19 once more.

With legacy mode enabled, Mint both boots and installs from USB -- and UEFI-mode installation is possible. Booting from the install on the SSD fixed disk, however, was possible only in recovery mode. Then I had to install a kernel newer than the one bundled with LM 19.

With 4.15.0-34 all critical hardware seems to work fine and the machine boots normally.

Given this USB3 port problem has been around for a while and is still not fixed, I thought I would mention a solution here. Needing a newer kernel for the installed OS also surprised me as all the hardware in this machine has been available for quite a bit longer than the 4.15.0-20 (default LM 19) kernel.

Is this something that Clem and team are likely able to solve?

If so, should I post to Github?

Otherwise, is this an issue for HP or upstream (i.e. Ubuntu)?

Given that Ubuntu 18.04.01 Live works fine, this may be a regression in Mint.

What kernel is 18.04.01 shipping with? When Mint 19.1 comes out in a few months time it will likely have the same kernel in the ISO.

4.15.0.-29

So the 19.1 iso when released will probably have the same kernel and will solve this issue.

Maybe, except the "booting from USB3" issue doesn't seem related to the kernel.

Consider: I was able to boot the machine (without resorting to legacy mode) using an old version of GParted (Live) which had a kernel in the 4.13 or 4.14 range

Also, viewtopic.php?f=46&t=254809 shows the same issue a year ago (Oct. 2017) with an HP Envy laptop which was a year older than that. USB3 has been available for many years now . . .

The new Envy is not currently in my possession, but I will make sure to test boot it with LM 19.1 Live USB when released and report back here.
