[SOLVED] Shutdown is rebooting;

Post by JeffYoo »

Hi Everyone,

I am new to linux and have been trying it out for and it is great. The only problem I can't seem to figure out is that whenever I attempt to shutdown my computer it ends up rebooting. Regardless of whether I use the GUI, or terminal with:

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -h now

I also try this command with different arguments with the same results (-H, -P)

I have also tried these changing the grub file to add acpi arguement.
first apci=off and then acpi=force

Code: Select all

sudo vi /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=off"

Code: Select all

sudo vi /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force"
Neither of these have worked but I read somewhere else that someone just turned their internet connection off before shutdown and it worked for them. And this sometimes works for me, but now I need to do this every time I shutdown. I even tried to writing a bash script to turn of my connection when I shutdown.

Code: Select all

#!bin/bash
ifconfig eno1 down
exit 0

Code: Select all

sudo vi /etc/init.d/shutdownScript.sh
sudo chmod a+x shutdownScript.sh
sudo chmod 777 shutdownScript.sh

sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/shutdownScript.sh /etc/rc0.d/K99_shutdown
sudo ln -s /etc/init.d/shutdownScript.sh /etc/rc6.d/K99_shutdown
sudo chmod a+x /etc/rc0.d/K99_shutdown /etc/rc6.d/K99_shutdown
None of that worked...
I am debating abandoning mint because I am just uncomfortable having my computer constantly running.
Please help!
Thanks for any help you can give.

I hate it when this happens.

Check your BIOS/UEFI setup for an option along the lines of "wake on LAN" and another for PXE Boot. Disable both and see if that helps.

I have the very same problem.

What I've found out so far:
  • The issue is not related to wakeonlan. I've turned that off immediately, still no improvement.
  • The issue is related to the Linux kernel 4.15.* I've tried several versions of that kernel, but the results are always the same. Under 4.13.*, shutdown works as expected.
    Unfortunately, this renders Mint 19 unusable for anyone affected by it because it comes with kernel 4.15 and does not allow any kernel versions below that. Mint 18.3, however, is still an option.
  • The issue seems to be hardware-specific. I have the problem on my notebook, but not on my desktop machine. Could you post your inxi -F output? Then I can compare it to mine and see which parts we have in common.

For the moment, I would suggest you stick to Mint 18.3 (which will be supported until 2021) and hope for a fix.
To get help, always post your system configuration. Open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + T), type the following command and copy its output: inxi -Fxxxrz. To preserve formatting, please make sure to post it inside [ code] [/ code] blocks.

these are the commands that i use to accomplish both shutdown and reboot on "19"...works on "18" as well as any ubuntu based version of linux ive tried it on...copy and paste to see if it works...it IS case sensitive...ive made launchers out of these as well and have them on my panel for shutdown and reboot purposes...one click rather than three to accomplish these functions...DAMIEN

Shutdown/Reboot Commands: the first is shutdown, the second is reboot.

Code: Select all

shutdown -Ph now

Code: Select all

shutdown -Pr now

I get the same result with shutdown 0
it is powered off within 5 seconds, usually about 3 seconds.

I have created a Keyboard Shortcut for

Code: Select all

shutdown -Ph now
using Cntl-Alt-O and that is my standard way of shutting down my PC now. Have been using this shortcut for several months with no ill effects at all.

much easier than trying to mouse around and do multiple clicks to shutdown.

I have tried the

Code: Select all

shutdown -Ph now
and it just causes my system to stall before shutdown; and I have to cold restart it.

I'm not a fan of this workaround anyhow. I want to power down my system the way it's meant to be, not use a hack to coax it into kind of doing that.

Meanwhile, I've compared our systems but couldn't find any similarities, although I haven't dug deep (e.g. comparing mainboard components). I'm posting my inxi -F output anyhow, in case it's any use. (Note that it's still on Mint 18.3 / kernel v4.13 to avoid the very shutdown problem discussed here.)

Might I ask you to remove the [SOLVED] marker from the topic? After all, the problem with kernel 4.15 hasn't actually been solved, but rather circumvented by using another kernel / version of the distro. That is a surrender, not a solution. ;)

Personally, I would prefer to get to the bottom of this. After all, we'll have to upgrade from Mint 18.3 / kernel 4.13 at some point in the future, and if this bug persists in future versions of the kernel, we'll be stuck with the very same problem.

It's solved as far as the OP is concerned. If you have an issue, please start your own thread.

Since the OP has removed the [SOLVED] marker and I have some news that may be relevant, I'll take the liberty to post my findings here.

Yesterday I installed the newest 4.15 kernel to try out a few things. It turns out the problem does no longer occur on my machine with kernel v4.15.0-34. Please note that this is a newer kernel version than the OP had installed (his was v4.15.0-20, which afair is the default kernel that comes with a fresh install of Mint 19). Apparently the kernel maintainers have found the problem and fixed it.

OP, if you're still reading this: Since you've gone back to Mint 18.3, could you try to install the 4.15 kernel on your machine and see if it works for you? (Go to your Update manager > View > Linux kernels > 4.15 > Install v4.15.0-34) If it doesn't work, you can uninstall 4.15 and go back to 4.13 at any time. If it does work, however, this means you can use Mint 19 after all... and I owe you an apology for not giving it another shot earlier. ;)
