[Solved] Long boot Mint 19 on Toshiba L750 with Samsung SSD and NVidia Graphics

Post by glokhoff »

After several days of searching this forum for hints as to what could be the solution for my problem, I ran out of steam and hope one of the guru's can help me...

I have a clean install of Linux Mint 19 Xfce (tried Cinnamon as well, but the problem is the same) as a dualboot with Windows 7 on a Toshiba laptop L750 with a Samsung EVO 850 SSD and NVidia graphics card:

I have removed the btrfs tools and progs as suggested in one of the posts, am running the nouveau display driver 1:1.0.15-2, and tried several other suggestions ((e.g. using different clocksource) from the forum.

I hope the report that the Samsung SSD drive is a complete disaster with Linux Mint is not true (anymore ?).

Suggestions on how to get this system to boot faster are highly appreciated ! Thanks in advance for taking the time to read through this...

It's absolutely false and always has been.

Your SSD is probably on its last legs. Install smartmontools and check that device.

Thanks for the quick response !

I installed the SSD with the intention to make the PC dual boot. It has had the long boot time since the start, with Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.3. So i doubt the SSD will be malfunctioning, as that would mean it was faulty from the start. Hoping the problem would be solved with Mint 19 I decided to give that a try.

This is the output of the short SMART self-test:
