Mint 19 Failed Cinnamon session, no VB installed

Post by simonsaysthis » Mon Sep 17, 2018 1:01 am

Hi all

this morning I got the infamous:

"cinnamon-session-cinnamon" failed. Read up about the problem but I never had Virtualbox installed, to begin with.

Prior to the boot I also noticed graphical distortions and sound distortions. Fixed the sound distortion by re-installing pulseaudio and alsa; attributed the screen issues to redshift (but not sure).

Managed to fix problem by reinstalling cinnamon meta packages but I would like to understand what went wrong here. What happened to cause this total lock out?

Update: Just noticing "nemo" file manager is also corrupted. What could the hell be going on?

My system is a new install of Mint 19

Have you done a hard reset at any point (shutdown via a long press of the power key) or had any power outage. That can cause filesystem damage and data loss.

Might be worth checking your SSD drives health - you can do this via the Disks App - select the drive in the side bar and then use the hamburger menu in the headerbar to select SMART Data and Self tests.

Wow, I love the look of your desktop. Is this XFCE?

Thanks for this. Definitely possible I hit the hard reset at some point. Will also do the SSD health test. Aside from that, this still worries me something like this can happen just like that. The error sounds just like the Virtualbox issue but without me actually having the software on my machine,

Cinnamon with the Cinnamox-Rhino theme - available as an optional download via the Themes settings app.

If you are ever in a position where you think you need to hard reset because the system has frozen up try this instead for a file system safe shutdown and reboot.

Holding Alt-SysReq (normally the Print Screen button) slowly key R E I S U B - http://blog.kember.net/articles/reisub- ... x-restart/

Re the cause of the issue nothing else springs to mind - I take it given you managed to reinstall cinnamon that there's no errors being reported by the package management system - broken or held packages or anything like that? There's nothing in your inxi output that looks problematic.

What kind of 'corruption' are you getting with nemo?
