Black screen after suspend

Post by luukjhu »

Hey guys!

I haven't had a forum account for over 5 years, but I'm new to Linux, and god does she have me working.

The problem is the following:
When I close my laptop and open it again, or any any other way trigger suspend it won't wake up again afterwards.
I open the laptop and all I get is a black screen.
Suspending the laptop makes a little funny noise that I don't think was there before, as if the fans stop very suddenly (speculation).

I tried entering my password in this black screen, pressing enter, and then using ctrl-alt-del to turn it off, or messing with brightness. But to no avail.

So it kinda looks like it's just frozen, not only black screen.

All this was triggered by changing the kernel from 4.15.0-33 to 4.15.0-34 in Grub... I tried reverting, but the problem persisted.
I also tried to use Timeshift to revert all this, but to no avail.

Here is my inxi -Fxz:

I have no idea what to try, there seem to be so many possible causes. But at least the problem is not inherent to my system (wasn't there before I messed with the Kernel)

Does anybody have any idea what could possibly be the problem?

Thank you so much for even reading this,

Best wishes,
Luuk

Turn off suspend and hibernate, and for Lid closed, set that to nothing.

that is what I had to do, and the screen just powers off while the lid is closed.
when the lid is raised up, it turns back on, and all is well.

while closed, the case is cool as a cumcumber.....
no HDD though, have a SSD.

Thanks AZgl,

Have done so, I do have an HDD though, so it's not really a solution for me, plus with the short battery life of my laptop it would just die in an hour or so in my backpack. But it does beat force shutdown every time I forget to turn off the laptop and accidentally close the lid.

If anybody had any more ideas, that would be very welcome still!

It's just so strange that this issue only appeared after having switched kernel once and then reverting it!

Thats why I find it hard to accept :p.

Thanks again AZgl for your reply!

I forgot to mention, my laptop is tethered to the a/c power lines.
I'm retired and surf from my recliner.
but, with the SSD, the battery will last for about 7 hours of active surfing.
lid closed, it will go 24 hours or more.

I have an ASUS thinkbook, no DVD, TP500L which runs cool to start with, thermostatic controlled fan.
so, with the SSD, the fan never turns on.

here is why I like to leave it ON all the time, just a few minutes ago, I saw our Great Pyrenees out "on guard" to be sure our property is safe..... they are a herd guard animal.... lovable but vocal all the time.

I caught her pix in a rare "pictorial moment", snapped the photos and used Android ASUS File Manager to instantly ship the pix to the laptop via WiFi..... had not even touched the laptop since yesterday evening, but with the lid closed, in vegetative state, it took the pix and left them on the Desktop for me to find.
