Restore loader after Win 7 installation

Post by stridder » Mon Sep 17, 2018 12:44 pm

Hello,

I installed Win 7 to a disk where Mint 18.2 is installed. (to another partition of course).
Windows of course rewritten the boot loader so now I can only boot to windows.
Whats the easiest way to restore Mint loader (is it Grub?) so that I could boot to both OS?
Disk uses MBR, and mint is on extended partitions (there are seperate partitions for root and home folders).
Windows is on primary partition.
Thank you.

Boot using liveDVD or USB and open Terminal and run

Code: Select all

sudo blkid ### shows disks and partitions
.... if your Mint locates on /dev/sda5, run

Code: Select all

sudo mount /dev/sda5 /mnt
sudo grub-install --boot-directory=/mnt/boot /dev/sda
sudo umount /mnt
When Mint has booted up, run

Code: Select all

sudo os-prober
sudo update-grub
