installing to USB flash drive

I am able to boot using live USB of Linux Mint 19 xfce 32-bit using boot parameter video=SVIDEO-1:d

I proceeded to install to a 128 GB SanDIsk USB flash drive.
(hard drive is broken and I do not want to spend the money on a ZIF hard drive which is rare)
I edited /etc/default/grub per ... -parameter

But the boot time is 3 to 5 times the 60 seconds I am getting with the live USB.

What can I do to lessen the boot time?
It almost seems that the boot parameter is being ignored.
